Looking for guidance in updating firmware/optimizing my new Fiio X5

I'm concerned about when you say you "held the correct two buttons down." Can you show me a diagram or a post an image displaying beyond any doubt, which two buttons you are actually pressing? Since following this thread that seems to be a spot still obfuscated in a hazy fog on unspecified vagueness.

I'm sorry to hear this. I saw your recent posts in the X5ii thread too. Do you have an extra micro SD card other than the 2 x 128GB that you have in the device right now?

If yes, then try this:
1. remove the 2 cards from the device and
2. use that extra card to first format it in the device again and try repeating the procedure to update the firmware.

I was thinking this is the best thing to try at this point. I don't have an extra one though. Would I be able to buy just an 8 gig Sandisk card and use that? Or do I have to shell out for a 32 gig or larger one?

Not yet. I have some job interviews and other important stuff going on this week and dealing with the Fiio was kind of taking over my mind for a couple days last week. Its too easy for me to get distracted and obsess over it if something were to go wrong again.

I have the sim card to use now though, and once things are more settled down I'll give this a try. I'll post back in here when I do.

I haven't gotten around to updating the firmware yet but I have a more serious issue right now. I connected my Fiio today to work on organizing folders and on the screen of the Fiio it visibly was malfunctioning, it showed the welcome screen but very slowly and choppily, and then it went black. Usually when you connect to the computer it just shows the USB connected message. Sure enough, something was wrong. It wouldn't let me click in to either of the drives, it said they weren't connected, though they showed up on my PC. So I ejected both of them, and disconnected the Fiio, as I usually do. I restarted it, and then I plugged it back in again. Now, only the F drive is actually showing up as connected and showing how much data is on it. The E drive just shows that it is connected, but when I clicked on it I got a message: "you need to format the disc in drive E before you can use it. Do you want to format it?" I'm leaving the screen as is at the moment cause I don't want to take any wrong steps here. I've spent the majority of my free time these past two weeks getting all my music onto the drives and then organizing it within the drives. This includes three days where I spent basically all of my waking hours doing this. I simply won't be able to do this again. If the music is lost, then I will have to return the Fiio, unfortunately.

So I would like to know what options I have for recovery, or how I can precede without losing the files and folders I've set up on this drive. What should I do?

I see. From looks of it, it could be one these possible things:

Faulty Fiio X5ii Unit – Device needs to be replaced
Good Device but a Buggy or Corrupted Firmware – Needs FW Update
Faulty SD Card – Needs Replacement
Corrupted SD Card – Needs Formatting and Putting non-corrupted data
Faulty SD Card port in the Device – Device needs to be replaced

At this point I’d suggest a Root-Cause analysis to find out which is causing the issue. This would take less than 30 mins:
  • Click Cancel on that message in the computer and eject the Fiio from the PC
  • Swap the SD Cards between the card slots and plug it back into the computer and try accessing both the drives E and F. If the PC throws an error about the Drive E again and not Drive F works fine, then possibly the card slot on the device or the Fiio device itself is faulty. If Drive E works well and Drive F is throwing an error, then we can say with a good level of confidence that the problem is in the SD card
  • In case you determine the problem is in one of the 128GB SD Cards, remove both the cards from the device. Try to make sure that there is no fault with the Fiio device by taking the newly bought 8GB SD Card, throw some music files in a folder and also load the firmware file in its root folder and insert the card in the slot in the device that shows up as Drive E and try connecting it to the computer again. If you are able to access the card without a problem then we are 99% sure there is no problem with the device.
  • Now repeat the #3 with the card but on the other card slot. If you get positive results, then your device is good.
  • Disconnect the device from the PC and perform the FW update. After the update, do not insert the SD card that you determined was faulty into the device again. You need to fix it before you put it back in the device.
  • During the process, if it was determined there was a fault in the Fiio device, try doing a firmware update using the 8GB card. And after the update, connect the device to the PC again with the SD cards and see if you can access the cards now. If one of the cards is still throwing an error then the SD card needs to be fixed. If the Fiio device is still acting weird, then it is best that you get it replaced.
  • During the process, if it was determined that one of the 128 GB SD cards was the one with the issue, you may want to reformat it and load it again with files (I know it is a pain, but that seems to be your only possible solution)

Thanks for the advice, I will get to work on this now.

One question though, there is software out there that claims to do data recovery on SD cards.. Instead of calling the data on the card a loss, if I discover the problem is with the card, is there any way I could recover the data, so I wouldn't have to do the reorganizing again?
