Cayin N5 DAP - Product Info (Post #2), Resources (Post #3) and Discussion

Sure thing.

I found the hissing to be quite audible when paired with the JH AUDIO ANGIE, in balanced out. Even when music was playing.

Andykong, I just tried the N5 balanced output with the JH Angie which is the same IEM Pinky has. It's rated at 17 Ohm impedance and 117 dB efficiency. When no track is playing I hear no hiss. When I select a track to play I clearly hear hiss over the music with the balanced connection. The issue remains when the track is paused... I hear the same hiss with the music paused. Turning the volume all the way down to zero does not affect the amount of hiss I hear.

The N5 has firmware 2.0 and magic number 20 (if that helps).

Very good, sincere thanks for your informative contribution.

Now that we know Shure SE846 (114dB) and JH Angie (117dB) will have hissing problem with N5 balanced, now I am interested to find out if low impedance 110dB IEM will share similar problem too.

The easier solution that I have in mind is Impedance Adapters, but I haven't come across 2.5mm TRRS based Impedance Adapter, maybe that is a custom order or DIY only solution right now,

No problem. I'm always glad to give valuable feedback.

I would have explained things in more detail earlier, but I thought the balanced-out hissing issue was well documented by now. You deconstructed the problem nicely in an older post: Balanced is using all four OpAmps, whereas SE only loads two of them. Therefore the noise will be worse in Balanced.

How the AK120ii avoids this, I don't know. It's pitch-black.

Can't speak for other brands, but I can discuss Cayin's approach in more detail.

(1) Choice of circuit design: Cayin N5 is truely Balanced driven because the voltage amplification and headphone amplification are "doubled" to accommodate L+, L-, R+, R- full differentiate audio signal.

(2) Choice of Op-Amp: Cayin want to make sure the non-balanced application are as capable as it should be, as this is the more popular and widely used options in the market. We opted for an Op-Amp that is famous for high current output, BUF634. We used the same Op-Amp in the more expensive N6, the only different is two BUF634 in N6, but four BUF634 in N5.

Is there a possibility to create playlist on the go? Something like on Rockbox, i.e. while already listening to an album, I'm adding another songs/albums to the playlist.

Cayin N5 will support M3U playlist in the next firmware upgrade, but we can't do dynamic playlist as you have described.

Wirefriend just posted his tour impression :beerchug:

Enjoyable sounding DAP with very good price/value ratio (by wirefriend)

Glad to run into a fellow DX100 users, that was my benchmark DAP for quite some time, until I switched to N6.

N5 is the current entry model DAP from Cayin, One of our bigger ambitious is to offer a low-cost upgrade to smart phone users who are looking for a better on-the-go music experience, this is how we perceived our entry-market position. To certain extend, we are flattered when many dedicated HeadFier has placed N5 against the Top of the Line DAPs, your support and positive feedback are most appreciated. On the other hand, I am glad to have Wirefriend compared the N5 against one of the better sounding smart phone.

While I don't expect a smart phone users will read this HeadFi thread directly, I am sure we are frequently the "consultant" of our friends who are interested int his topic, and our opinion counts. That's why I think discussion like these is important for Cayin N5 to establish place in the entry level DAP market.

Hey! Not fair, mine doesn't do that, I just checked!

Andykong, what dac is that? It looks fantastic, like some audio jewellery. I checked the Cayin site but can't find it. Cheers.

Well, I am testing new product and new firmware at the same time, so neither is available immediately.

As soon as the new firmware is ready, I'll post the download link immediately. we need more time to plan for the product launch, I don't have a date yet, but will definitely provide first hand information to Cayin users when I have green light for that. :beerchug:
