Astell&Kern AK380

Looks like when I break 'em I do break 'em good. My AK380 has been rebooting continuously since last week. Tried many different Android commands but still can't recover.

P.S. I didn't do anything to get it to boot continuously. I was listening to a std 16/44.1 PCM album.
P.P.S. 2nd unit (or 3rd?). I've sent it back twice. 1st time was a replacement unit. 2nd time I think they just fixed up the replacement or replaced internals of the 2nd unit.

Wow! This looked serious!

Were you listening to J-pop at high volumes again? Some DAPs cannot take it.

What sort of discounted prices can you pick one up for?  It would be great if you could direct me to a link or two.  Thanks.

Negotiation at the store. I offered to buy AK380 and the amp together, and got around $200 off the total. Yes, I intentionally waited till the amp to come out so that I could negotiate for the combo deal.

Haha, I better tune down the volume when listening to J-Pop then. I wonder if it's because AnakChan's unit is running 1.15?

  Hi Jlinjo,

Sorry I noticed the picture and didn't see your comments regarding the improvements in sound quality.  That's really amazing!!!.  The external amp alone is real a step up sound quality wise and then with the mod it improves even more.  WOW !!!  I'm ready for the mod.  If I don't have to carry that Hugo around I'm going to be real happy..  I just hope AK will release the integrated AK380+External Amp case really soon.

Sincerely,
-Speed

Hi Speed,

My RWAK380-Amp section I think is undergoing breaking in @ 24hours now.
Yesterday at 12hours, the bass disappeared and everything sounded shouty. Typical AK when undergoing break in.
at 24hours today, bass reappear but not enough weight as compared to RWAK380, High is still on the brighter side.
Conclusion: At the moment I prefer without RWAK380 without the amp.

50hours Now: The ENERGY, Separation and focus holographically AMAZING!!!!!!! Those Tight Bass hitting hard with authority no bloat(Subwoofer in your head!). No longer bright.

It's the pursuit of perfection, we'll never reach perfection but each step closer is always worth the price and the effort. It's dead serious to some of us, and not funny at all.

Well if you remember (I think I shared it here at least), it used to reboot itself after every DSD/DXD track in 1.14. Then I sent it back. It came back a week later as 1.15 and the 1st time it rebooted continuously after enabling WiFi but somehow I managed to reset it and it worked fine mostly (the only issue at the time was the known DXD DSD128/256 not having any sound after the next track, but at least it stopped the reboot).

Last week after listening to an hr of PCM (no issues then), at the end of the last track of the album it rebooted itself and this time I couldn't get it out of the continuous reboot. Since I've had issues since 1.14 and even though the issues have varied, I'm inclined to think of a possibility of a h/w issue. Note that I have the demo version of the AK380 with 32GB internal memory. So it's designed somewhat slightly different from the commercial 256GB versions.

Not much being said about the latest firmware update.  Am I right in thinking that version 1.17 was mostly about introducing streamer functionality and didn't have much effect (good or bad) on sound quality?
Sorry, mean't ripper, not streamer.

The notification window of new firmware on the player itself already tells you all the changes, except SQ which AK never mentions. I posted a picture of that window in my post here:

SQ did change, yeah. Definitely better than 1.14, and all previous versions too imo.

Oh I totally forgot the reason why your demo was upgraded to 1.15. If that problem already existed in 1.14 then I'm inclined to agree with you that it might be caused by hardware issue. So now the question is... when will you get yourself an official commercial AK380?

How is the ak380 compare to paw gold on the sound quality? Some comments better then 240ss.
Completely different. AK380 has more width of stage by far, and more treble sparkle and air. Paw Gold has more depth, and bass has more body, sound feels more powerful. Overall it is more raw and emotional. I would need to compare side by side for a longer time. I think maybe more people will prefer the AK380 on first listen as its qualities are more obvious, but after a while it could be different.
