$1295 Aurender FLOW - portable DAC/amp with mSATA slot for up to 1TB SSD

I guess it has no adequate processor to act as a DAP. And not GUI.

What do you mean by "no adequate processor"? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the DAC and amp all you need? (or it could be an embarrassing misconception on my part...)

And not having a GUI shouldn't be a prob since there's the Altmann Tera Player HAHAHA

close but no cigar , DAC and AMP need something to actually tell them to do something this is the processor , even the altmann tera have a processor (an extremely weak one)

Hiya all,

Could you please pass me your questions about this? I have an opportunity to ask (over dinner?) on Friday. Guess they're making a launch in Tokyo's Fujiya Autumn Festival.

Cheers

Hardware questions for V1000

  • UAC 2.0 (USB Audio Class 2.0) was mentioned in the spec, did you guys get a chance to test that with iOS 7.X / 8.X devices with that Camera Connection Kit/Onkyo HF Player combo? How about Android 4.X / 5.X devices with OTG cables/USB Audio Player Pro combo?
  • How did you guys implement support for DSD? Was that simply DoP (DSD-over-PCM) or something else? For instance, Korg wrote something proprietary for their own DS-DAC-100 while no love for DoP whatsoever.
  • Are you planning to add support for DoP via its Toslink (optical) input in the future? Users of QLS QA360 would be glad to get that sorted out.
  • Is Wi-Fi supported by V1000 or otherwise? We've been wondering how the remote app for iPad could provide support for volume control since the introduction of Aurender App Version 1.8.23 recently.
  • Are those hardware buttons on the side programmable by any chance? We were speculating how we're supposed to use those buttons.

Software for iPad (Aurender Cundoctor)

  • Besides volume control, what else could we use that software for?

Well, I am sorry, but I still do not understand how to use it ?  I must be missing something ! ?

if it is a "Hugo with internal storage" but with still the need for a PC/Mac, then....what is the point of the internal storage ?

My understanding is that this device serves two purposes:
1. Portable USB DAC/AMP for notebook
2. USB external storage

It maybe useful for people who travel a lot for work with a notedbook and instead or carrying two devices(hdd and dac/amp) they can now carry one...

Very strange !!

Actually, I find this to be quite a master stroke. Assuming there's a top notch dac and amp, not dealing with a display and UI would really optimize the design and the architecture of the unit. You leverage on a great interface (iphone/ipad remote), you save batt on the display, and direct power to where it's really needed. Also, many a situation, I hate having to fiddle with two devices, phone and dap, during my commute. It'll be great to leave the unit in a pocket or bag, use the phone to surf and what not, time to change tracks, just stay with the phone. Really am interested in this, but the price...man...

This will either create a whole new niche (don't ask me which niche as I still cannot figure out what this device is) or it will be one sexy paperweight.

Software for iPad (Aurender Cundoctor)
  • Besides volume control, what else could we use that software for?

1) Storage acts as external storage to the PC player (iTunes, A+, etc).
2) iOS8 iPad Onkyo player - Lightning/USB adapter - USB2.0-to-USB3.0 - Flow
3) Physical buttons would control tracks of Onkyo (and I believe Music player too but I wasn't using music player). Not programmable (by us at least).
4) It's DoP and USB only, no plans for Optical
5) No Wifi support
6) Volume resets when player is stopped (i.e. at least on the iPad, killed from memory) for safety reasons.
7) This uses the ES9018K2M DAC and OPA1611 OpAmps, LME49600 current buffer

Didn't ask about software - or I did but I think my question was misunderstood.

Fantastic reply and many thanks for your testing as well as pictures.

Onkyo HF Player probably won't access external storage and that's kinda moot to me. Maybe Hibiki could do that once we get in touch with the developer

Android with root access could mount external storage easily but those hardware buttons wouldn't work with UAPP unless they're willing to provide an API of some sort.

That means we're left with this little Windows PC when it comes to a reasonably portable setup

They might not wanna get those hardware buttons to work for any DSD-capable software players under Windows, then we'll just control either foobar2000 or JRMC with our smartphone.

$200 or so for that little Windows PC
$500 or so for Samsung 1TB mSATA SSD
$1249 for Aurender FLOW

Throw in shipping and a better USB cable, that's roughly a grand and a half.

Oh I forgot to mention that at least for me, when I was trying the Onkyo Player with the Flow, there were some performance issues that as I was multitasking & typing my notes on the iPad about the Flow whilst listening, the music was cutting out with each key tap. I didn't try with Music Player but I didn't hear any other HF members there mentioning about it. So with that, I probably don't want the iDevice having read/write accessibility to the external storage anyway (with the current iPad at least) having its CPU dealing with switching USB protocols reading via the lightning/USB to read the storage, then sending it back over the lightning/USB to the DAC.

I may try the Music Player instead to see if it cuts out whilst multitasking.

It seems the Aurender Flow can include in one box: a USB hub, a USB hard drive, a power bank, a USB DAC and an amp.
