*sigh* pads are bigger than the old one an they are tuneing it for a touch more bass

even worse I don't have the orignal W1000 either... I could use all three, since I do like the W1000 series headphones... *sigh* but thank gawd I've got my W1000X I need to get the Orignal before it get's too rare. I wish ATH would just make a new W5000 or a new totl

still nice to finally see another full sized W series

The pads look thick and comfortable. It's good that they're keeping with the 3D-wing design.
Not looking to buy at the moment, but will keep an interest.
Subbed.

I like the Wing Design my self, sits nicely on the noggin and thick pads are a plus!

The original W1000 is very different compared to the W1000X.

Whereas the W1000X tends to sound a bit squished in, with a more forward and aggressive, bassy sound, the original is a polite well-mannered headphone with very good treble extension, very good sense of space and separation, but with very little bass.

In fact, even after modification, its bass still doesn't reach low enough for a more "realistic" rendition. It sounds like it cuts off pretty abruptly, making you want more.

But its mid and treble far eclipses that of any other W headphone released afterwards IMO. It has a very clean and neutral sound signature for an Audio Technica headphone, though the midrange is still forward in the same sense.

If it had just a smidgen more bass extension, it would have been the flagship IMO, because there is no other headphone from Audio Technica that could portray space and cleanliness the way the W1000 did.

Anyway, interested in how this W1000Z will be tuned. I can see they brought the leather ear pads back. Or maybe it's synthetic?

Are these going to have more bass than the W1000X?

Also I really like how the new pads are looking. Hopefully it'll fix some of the awkward seal issues the W series usually has. I wonder if it'll fit the older W-series like the W5000.

Knowing your taste, I wouldn't recommend it.

Just patiently wait for the Z7's impressions.

I found the D2k to be dark an some what smooth

but I like just having the wood backs if only as a statement. That and I do share my music with friends, so different or opposite colored cans serve me well! Most all of my friends like the D2k over my W1000x, though I found a nicer D5k that I'll be closing the purchase on shortly

Well, in that case...

Why not save up and get a HE-560? It's about the same price as the Z7 on the used market, and I think it'll be right up your alley.

It combines the best qualities of a highly technical headphone with a midrange that's highly reminiscent of the top-end Audio Technica headphones IMO.

If I didn't hear the HE-560, I'd still have the W1000.

I may wait just a little, I like my HE 4 still. That and I need to get my Closed Back an portable situation in check before I get another At home can. I may Shoot for the HE 560 in the Spring, still not a HUGE fan of the Veneer but meh it looks enough like wood so I'll get over it ya know

Well that is interesting. Aren't the current w1000xs considered one of the best headphones in the ~$500 category?

A favorite for sure and yea a fully modded one sits at around $500

If this revision is a touch bassier, it'll be nice to see how it compares to the old D5k Line, we know ATH has a nice presance on the low end End Head Can with the Solid Bass Series

So we shall see!

Fully modded? Do they need to be modded to be competitive?

I think so, I don't remember how the stock cans sounded to be honest, kinda warm I think... it's been to long. The pair I have now have L3000 ear Pads an a touch of dynamat in the Deepest part of the can, the result is a very dry sound in the bass and an aggressive sound through out the rest of the spectrum. To that end my W1000x Really sounds best with very warm gear, like my HM 801

Though to be honest, there are some songs that it sounds spectullar with out of my NFB10ES2 [a Dark n Dry amp] So... yea once you mod it you essitanlly get a Closed Back Grado with a very unique sound stage, but I happen to like it and I've had it for 2 years now, and I've yet to find a closed back I like as much as I do it
