yes that is why i said opinions vary, and yes i will get one pair of MDR-1, so ClieOs tell me, the connecting jack in the headphones end is 3.5mm too or is dreaded 2.5mm? f.e for when the cable needs to be replaced

You should be getting two pair of cable (one with mic and one doesn't). It is 3.5mm jack.

Yeah its incredible how tiny it is with huge run times feels like a good build as well, it's great to see Sony letting go of its strict expandable memory policy or lack of it on their devices, this is a step in the right direction, but that ×××××× plug, why?? At least hang a micro usb port of the side.
I don't understand Sony you are supplying half usb cable with no power pack but you expect us to carry this cable. For a company with incredible ideas and tech it seems logic is running short. End of bitch.
Oh I thought I seen the high res symbol on and the eq was active, I'll double check, thanks.

That nasty plug people complain about is how I get line quality out for amping.

They have a micro to WM nub for people like you.

Once you amp it you'll gain respect for the port.

What site would people recommend for purchasing one of these into Ireland? I'm looking to import one from outside the EU to bypass the volume limit. Been looking at accessoryjack and shenzenaudio but just worried that the player won't have English language menus.
Do people also reckon is it worth the extra dolla for the 64gb player? Or just put the difference on an SD card?

I really don't want to amp it. Main reason for choosing this over other audio players is the small size as I'm usually carrying a smartphone in my pockets too. An amp adds too much extra to carry around.
I would've thought accessoryjack might have had an english menu seeing as it's based in Hong Kong?

I would recommend another headphone set if you can't get the 1A.  Seems like the A17 had trouble driving the 1R as it sounded noticeably duller compared to the 1A.  I'm sure the 1R sounds fine with an external amp.

Thanks, sadly sony mexico only sells the MDR-1R, and well they say the 1R is better suited for classical music, of course opinions vary a lot, now i am undecided which color to pick for the NWZ-A17 as they sell it in two clolors (here in Mex, in the US is only silver): blue/teal or black.

Do you know by chance which file system the sony use to format the microSD card, when you format inside the player? (f.e fiio uses FAT32, but MS recommends exFat), the other thing is the user manual states 51Hrs battery life for uncompressed wav 1411Kbps, i assume, FLAC 16/44.1 is the same amount in theory , as playback conditions vary to each user

There are sellers in Hong Kong on ebay that claim English menus for their NWZ-A17 units.

to anyone whos amping this ,what do you amp it with ? Is there anything that is actually of the same footprint as this thing?

I am using my PHA-3 to take advantage of the digital output.  I have also tried RSA SR71B (Picture) and Cypher Labs AlgoRhythm Duet, both with excellent results.  The LO of the WM port is volume-challenged but clean, and as such, works well with powerful amps like the SR71B and the Duet.  I still prefer the PHA-3 setup since I get to use the better DAC on the PHA-3 and achieve digital->balanced output, instead of the "simulated" balanced setup (i.e. single end input to balanced output) on the SR71B and the Duet.  For all the amps I use, footprint is an issue.  I think the new ALO National+ may be the closest thing in terms of footprint (1.7" x 4.3" for A17 and 1.8" x 3.37" for the National+).  I am waiting for it to come out in Japan so that I can audition it first before I purchase, as noise floor has been an issue for me with some of the ALO amps in the past.

It formats to exFAT.

I got mine (a rose A17) from accessoryjack, and it defaults to English.  I don't know if it's the Hong Kong model or not, as the box just says the set is designed "only for tourists and is not designed for use in Japan."  It has a whole bunch of different languages to choose from.

As for size, if you aren't going to exceed the size of a microSD + whatever size internal you get, I'll just point out that I get far faster transfers going directly to a microSDXC through something like a SanDisk MicroMate than I do loading files when it goes through the Walkman.  I don't know if this is because of the cable, the Walkman, the fact that I transfer with `cp -Rvu` from Linux, or what.

So you bought this one from them?

Good stuff. Thanks for the info. Did you get hit for much customs into whatever country you bought it into?
