Sony's new flagship 2014 - MDR-Z7

I tried the HD800 also and I did not quite like them. The treble seems to be a bit off, not realistic.
Some of the previous review statements  on the Z7 standout for me.

highly detailed like my 7520

scales well with music with wide dynamic range  like my 7520 and better than my other Sennheiser cans.

From my point of view the Z7 sounds like it could be a soup-up 7520 with larger drivers, case and pads.

Finally in the comments selection one user stated that the Sony Z7 is Wow and at least close to the AKG 812 which by the way cost almost $1400.
While I was planning to try the HE-560 at the RMAF but I am keeping a close eye on this.
I have the 7520 and they're highly impressive for the money. I'd be curious how they're going to expand on it, my take is they're going with a different sound signature.

As for the akg812 comparison, better hope they're not similar. The 812s were not the impressive with the price tag and performance.

there seems to be a mixed bag of opinions on the K812. Some absolutely adore them, some absolutely despise them.

Honestly, give me a closed back with the K812 sound and I can live with that [not to mention the price of the MDR Z7]

how ever it's good to hear there's a more workable cable option. If the headphones already has a quad cable running into a 3.5mm, Let's hope it's at least 2 meters, give us some room to chop off that jack and sodder in a balanced termination. The cable it self looks great, it'd be a shame it if wasn't at least 2 meters long, give the modders some room to do chop n swap on that jack. OR maybe they will wise up and sell it with a 4pin XLR :/ cmon sony. I don't want use my $800 flag ship with a schiity 3.5mm SE source,

Ok yes there are some WONDERFUL sounding Single End amps, but even Jason at Schiit Agree's balanced is the way to go, there for let's hope sony caters to that and offers us a factory 4pin XLR

OR I'll just give me money to my cable guy, I'm sure he'd rather have the buisness anyways <3

still Kudos on them for making a Dac/Amp that will work with their headphone, that's a smart move

The 812s are the th900 of totl headphones. Severely overpriced and performs at half its cost. I listened on a Bottlehead SEX amp in a quiet room through their battery DAC... I was very much looking forward to try what seems to be AKG's answer to the hd800 only to realize it was a big disappointment. Build quality was the highlight of that headphone by far.

Yes the MDR-Z7 comes with a 3 m (Detachable), 2 m (Balance connection) cable. I did the same thing with my HD598 which also uses a quad cable and I put in a 4-pin XLR on it. Sony is also planing to offer custom cable made by Kimber Cable as an option but waiting for more info on that.

It could be the system not being that good of a match for the K812 as my experience with it revealed it is a very synergy dependent headphone. I generally liked the K812 more than the HD 800 on the numerous occasions I auditioned the two.

Odd that they'd make the balanced cable shorter as balanced is typically reserved for home gear...

... then again it IS specifically for the new PHA so whatever

Yes, I think thats the point: that cable uses 3,5mm connectors in both sides, so its intended specifically for their mobile amp.

agree that the k812 is a disappointment. the th900 on the other hand is an exceptional closed can and a worthy flagship as reflected in the praise it's received from reviewers, owners and folks who have heard it at meets. anyways, back to the mdr-z7.
