Sony's new flagship 2014 - MDR-Z7

On the other side of the hype train this could end up rivaling their past flagships

That is something I truly would love to see happen!

Until that day comes.............

If sony is planning on a >2k release they hopefully have the same mindset about it because otherwise there's going to be a huge disappoint train passing through

I don't see why Sony can't revisit the MDR-R10 with a new facelift and maybe even new drivers tuned very closely..those were limited production with what...2000-3000 made and still hails as one of the "unobtainables?"

If you look closely at the earcups of the Z7, you will notice that they have a slightly canted profile, which appears to be a possible design homage to the canted earcups of the R10 (just not nearly as ridiculous looking, IMO).

So who knows, Sony's next flagship could be the spiritual successor to the R10, or even the Qualia 010, or be something completely out of left field.

Either one would put a huge grin on my face!

hype train is right. this can hasn't even been released yet and folks are already speculating about some mythical flagship can from sony that's being released on the never never.

lol. i wonder what the signal processing does anyway. i would rather not have that feature and save some bucks

Me too... I consider the claim misleading at best. That information is *gone* and everything they can do is guesswork. Thats why my first move was to disable that circuit, much to the dismay of the staff showing me the device

Are you saying my lack of faith disturbs you?

Well, that's better than telling me you're my father

*I'd love to hear these blasts from the pasts you mention, until if/then I'll reserve my judgement (maybe)*

I wonder how hard the Z7 will bass EQ?

I wonder if SONY design team thought, "if we build it, they will EQ..."

Sounds like it's got potential maybe in the frequency response field of dreams....

* welp, 70mm drivers, bites knuckles....*

edit: Z7 back up on SONY UK site @£549.00 GBP

I saw your empty booth... they were waiting for you...
Regarding 70mm drivers: initially I was a bit split about that... but given the structure of the driver (i.e. not using a speaker like cone) it seems to work out. Really can't tell how much air they could move though... my guess is still less than the Fostexes.

Looking at their past its of course an interesting thing to think about what they might be able to come up with. At least they seem to be serious about that... so if a real flagship is planned / in the works I think its worth a look. I'll not hold my breath though...

On a side note: the Z7 resides in my Amazon basket. Not yet decided on that... I still rather tend to 'No'. Lets see...

You obviously havent heard the 70mm Sony MA900 or XB1000, both move more air than the TH900 or any other headphone for that matter (you need a very good amp to witness it though). What do you expect? Its a bloody 70mm driver, my ears actually hurt from the sound pressure in my ears after a while with them. If you are after sound you can not just hear but FEEL then you cant go past a 70mm Sony.

I've heard neither nor am I interested in them: I hardly use my TH900 as it has a bit too much bass for me even without any EQing.

Regarding the capability to move air: while surface area is of course important (radius goes into the equation by square), the whole thing is not that easy to compare as the driver construction differs quite a bit between the Z7 and the Fostex (which I guess has a higher Xmax btw. and maybe even a higher area that actually does said Xmax).

Regarding 'very good amp': it does not need that much power to move those tiny drivers. So that would not be the problem. But its simply nothing I strive for, its merely a thought that comes to mind when hearing about a 70mm headphone driver... just technical curiosity, nothing that I consider important to my listening.

If I remember correctly, if everything else is equal a bigger driver has an advantage over a smaller driver as it requires less excursion to generate an equivalent sound pressure.  This should result in less distortion and often gives greater dynamics.  Of course, "everything else" is probably not equal and I suppose you may get to the stage where a bigger driver begins to have difficulty with higher frequencies.

Regarding cables for the X7, does anyone know any details about the Kimber cables in the pictures?  If an aftermarket cable was used, what type of connectors would be required?  The standard cable is a bit long at 3m, I would want something shorter.
