I heard the 430HA today feeding an HE-6 and Abyss. Wow

Tons and tons of power for the HE-6 with room to spare. Overall impressions are that it is an extremely smooth sound. I heard a tiny bit of brightness at the top though I don't know if that was from the dac or the amp.

I haven't heard them back to back, but going from memory I'd give the nod to the 430HA.

Few days more and I'll taste the waters personally....

In the meanwhile I received 280D DSD Dac: maybe too early to judge, but seems really promising (testing with Cavalli Liquid Glass and V281)...

Interesting none of the reviews have really reviewed the DAC or discussed the 430 as a Preamp.

I find that absolute sound usually do not do a in depth review unless it is for some megabux equipment.  Also most reviewers I would think would concentrate on the primary use of the equipment. Out of curiosity , I wonder how the 430ha sounds as a pre-amp vs the closest moon stand alone pre-amp of comparable price.

From what I read out of the white paper, they put a lot of that unit into the 430., They are very similar other than balanced outputs and a few more Analog inputs. I suspect that the sound would be very close.

Any idea if the same applies to the dac? The 430HA D sounds very similar to the review of the standalone unit which is floating around the internet somewhere.

The DAC add on is a strong implementation of the 9018. I would call it a bargain at $800. The stand alone gets to dedicate all the power supply magic that Moon is renowned for exclusively to that purpose. SO I would expect better performance. However, we are not going to hear massive differences at this point. The DAC add on is a very strong bang for the buck contender.

I imagine if you took that add-on dac and added a bunch of outputs and a chassis and a power supply etc, you would be looking at a couple of grand for essentially the same dac.  Well that's how I view it anyway

Basically that is what you would have. I am sure they have a few extra things up their engineering sleeve though.

Yes, it will be my SS reference.

Right that this amp is really powerful but I would compare cans like HD800, Abyss, HE-6 also fueled by the new HEADA Aurorasound reviewed by Currawong to check soundstage and musicality. Perhaps rompishment versus refinement ? The Moon more rock, electro, acoustical and the Heada more classical ??

I have not found a weakness yet in the Moon 430HA.

So far I have used:

HD800
HD650
LCD-X
Alpha Primes
Abyss-1266

I have listened to Rock, Folk, Acoustic, Classical, Techno, EDM, Metal

I wish I had the HEADA unit but I do not. Frankly, I have not missed any particular aspect I seek from a headphone amp. This is a reference class unit.

I have heard the 430HA with the HE-6, Abyss, HD800. Although my time was brief, I was very impressed across the board.
