Hello all,
I appreciate any suggestions in advance.
In my ever increasing search for better musical pleasure I'm left with some questions regarding a potential purchase....
Own:
X5 for home use
X1 (plus E11K) for on the go
Samsung Note 3 (plus E18) sitting around collecting dust after upgrade to Nexus 6P
Question:
Should I purchase an X7?
Or should I purchase a DAC/AMP like the OPPA HA-2 to pair with the Note 3?
Or what other options should I consider within a somewhat reasonable budget?
The goal is to achieve a superior listening experience at home and possibly on the go.
How much of an increase in audio is the X7 compared to other and existing options?
Oh almost forgot head gear:
Audio Technica ATHESW9A enjoy at home
Griffin Woodtones best $20 ever spent, love this sound
E2Cs on train, motorcycle
EX1 really dig this sound

I have both - I won't say Mojo is in anyway an upgrade or downgrade over X7 as far as SQ is concerned. They are both really good for what they do - Mojo offers more power (at least when compared to X7's stock IEM module) and better texture over mid and lower range, though not as good in soundstage, on both width and depth. Personally I think they are quite equally matched overall, though I think X7 might have the upper hand given the amp module is upgradeable.

If I used a coax connect from x7 to Mojo, would the tidal app work? It does not work with my note 3 usb otg to Mojo.

something just happened, and i don't know quite how to feel about it:

i'm listening to the latest album from Lana Del Rey with my Grado RS1 + FiiO X7, when i suddenly start to notice that at the points where she sings, there's just a bit more background noise.

it's not the player, it's in the recording.

i tried to see if i could hear this with my Grado GR10e IEMs, and i can not.

ten points to FiiO
eight points to the RS1

but no points to my beloved in ear monitors.
and a premonitional pain to my wallet. soon i will have to go hunting for new in ears. and possibly re-rip half my music library again (something i did 2 years ago as well, spending a good 100 hours ripping everything with EAC, but not with a calibrated drive)

Dude!

You must go for Ie800 if you like Grado mids and treble. Bass is much much more on ie800, but it might work out fine.

Grado in general are the only headphones that have those sweet mids of my ie800. If only there was a closed back grado out there.

You guys using the x7 with the mojo coaxial. What length of cable is good for stacking?

Never tried Tidal, but BubbleUPnP works just fine with streaming so I don't see why it won't work on any other streaming apps.

Cable length depends on a few factors, but in general you want it to be as short as possible. Here are the two I made:

The right angled version is of course much lower in profile and easier to use.

How long are they? 4.5 or 6 inches with right angle termination seem easier to you?

The right angled one is about 3.25 inches. That probably as short as I want to go as the cable I used is RG179 (75ohm coax) and it doesn't bend that well when it is too short, plus the cable sleeve I used increased the stiffness.

The longer you go the easier it gets, of course. But too long and the cable will get in the way.

Hopefully Fiio won't start thinking this way.

James, isn't that possible when the customer buys his X7, to propose him several amp options instead of just selling the product without amp?
For instance when you buy a computer, on the retailer website you can choose the ROM etc.
You would send both the X7 unamped and the chosen amp. Would it be likely?

there will have too many SKU, we have plan to release 2G+64G X7 in the coming soon, and there may have 4 ~6 amp module, them we have to handle 2 * 6 = 12 SKU, which are too danger to us to control the stock.

Why will the AM3 be less money?

Probably because the the BUF634 in AM2 is about $10 a piece and you need two of them, while the TPA6120A2 in AM3 is only $6 a piece and you only need one of them.
