I have a Samsung S3 phone with a 64GB memory card. Do you know if the micro iDSD will work straight out of the box playing DSD 64 files? Or do I need a special type of app on the phone. I think USB host is available on my phone but I have no clue how the rest would work out. Some kind of insights on Android would be great.

I have downloaded the Onkyo Player for my iPad so I know it works there but my iPad is only 16GB and I am looking for a smart way to play my DSD files (current collection is around 40GB) without spending to much extra on hardware. So if the Android solution would work that would be great. Right now I cant test it myself because I don't own the nano iDSD.

Hi,

App needed:
USB Audio Player Pro
(https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.extreamsd.usbaudioplayerpro)

For a list of Android devices supported:
http://www.extreamsd.com/USBAudioRecorderPRO/
http://www.head-fi.org/t/595071/android-phones-and-usb-dacs/1140

  1. Android device that can run Android 4.1 or above
  2. USB Host mode has been enabled by the Android manufacturer
  3. Android device running Android Open Accessory (AOA) protocol version 2.0

This is all open-sourced material so you have to familiarise yourself - it will be fun.

It isn't quite plug 'n play as with Onkyo HF Player on the iPad/iPhone!

And you have to do some configuring to enable it to play DSD as it of course, cannot play straight through. You have to have DoP-FLAC files - which involves some work (no free lunches).

ps: you can open a support ticket to request the Android Audio pdf (it is a decent size).

Very nice to hear that, but I have one question: as far as I know, power from battery should be of a better quality than other power sources like wall socket and more than everything from USB. Better quality power supply = (in theory) better sound quality.
How did you manage to have the same performance (= sound quality, I guess) over the two different power supplies?
As far as I understand, this means you really made a great job!!!

Sorry, flies too close to proprietary technology which cannot go public.

If a battery-power DAC/Headamp can drive the HE-6, ergo, it SHOULD have a sprinkling of factor X.

Just try it for yourself in due course.

And if you read the previous tech notes, we have provided as much information as we can divulge there.

Does this mean that I won't need my iPurifier, iUSBPower, and split USB cable anymore? :)

Hi,

Some background, in descending order of impact (see brackets for equivalent hifi-examples):

1. iUSB Power = PS audio mains regenerator (pure, clean mains)

2. Gemini = separate audio+power cables you don’t twist ICs and PCs together in hifi system?)

3. iPurifier = audio + power filter (eg mains filter, but in this device for audio as well)

Tech Notes here for more exhaustive reading: http://ifi-audio.com/tech-notes/

So as you can see, they all perform different tasks. Fundamentally, USB was not originally designed for high-quality audio playback.

The micro iDSD has the iPurifier built-in. Please read previous post on Super Duper feature 2.2 (no point to repeat here).

Analogy
If you have a Ferrari (the micro iDSD), normal USB power is the equivalent of putting Tesco Unleaded in.

With the work we have done and if you run it on internal battery and with its internal iPurifier, it is the equivalent of putting in Shell Super.

But if you run on USB power and use the iUSB, Gemini and iPurifier, you are putting in Shell Nitro.

There is always no harm in doing the best that one can do. But with the case of the micro iDSD, it will not be as large as with another DAC.

Thanks

Thanks iFi for your reply, but I was only jesting... I fully intend to be feeding as much octane into the micro iDSD as I can using my iUSBPower and best USB cables.

Hats off to you on the total development time. From brainstorming to shipped product in much less than 6 months, very impressive!

Everyone at iFi deserves a beer, and then another!

After the first 512 units have shipped we may well take up your medicinal advice

Don't complain if there are no Head-Fi updates...

To be fair we had the nano iDSD which launched in December - so it was not a pure ground-up design.

But 6-8 months is fairly rapid going especially as we also do the software side which adds to the development work needed (pls insert expletive that is a bit stronger than "blinking heck").

Thanks again all.
