New Teac HA-P50-B Portable DAC Amp
Aug 16, 2014 at 3:44 AM Post #76 of 319
Got the HA-50 as my first portable DAC.  I'm currently pairing with the IE800 and iPod touch 5G.  I'm liking the sound quality so far. My music seems to come out with much more detail.

Software-wise on iOS:
On my iOS devices it does not need the TEAC app. to stream sound to the DAC and so far I've played music through the default music app. and Spotify with no problems.
If using the TEAC app., note that it will disable itself unless the DAC is connected. I don't use equalizers so I can't really comment on this app's feature.  The app. is able to see your iOS music collection as well as its own (http://www.teac.com/product/hr_audio_player_for_ios/).  To keep it simple, it's just plug and play for iOS devices.  No adapter needed nor app.

Software-wise on PC (Win7):
So far, I have only got sound to it from the TEAC music player app (http://www.teac.com/product/hr_audio_player/). I couldn't figure out to use it as a sit-in sound card for my PC which was disappointing.

The app. works like a regular music player, you create the playlist by opening your .mp3, .flac, etc. files.  I don't really see myself using it for the PC anymore since it can only play music files when paired with a Win7 system.

Hardware-wise:
Very solid build. All metal throughout the main body and the side rails are nice since they provide some protection for your cable connections and against accidental touching of the controls.  It is a bit heavier than I'd like, almost as heavy as a 5" hard drive. I was really worried how much damage it would take if I were to drop it since it was so dense.

I really like the knob since my fingers grip it pretty easily and it provides a bit of friction so you don't turn it too easily. When charging with the barrel plug cable from USB 3.0, it does spark on touch. I'm not sure if this is bad or not. It's probably due to the higher amount current available via USB 3.0 vs USB 2.0.  When using USB 2.0, it's doesn't spark, at least that I can notice.

With the sound, I do notice some noise pass the 60-75% volume level and when I my iPhone 5S nearby or strapped to it, I can hear the radio noise generated by cellular signals.

Also as mentioned before, I do notice my iPod's battery drains much more quickly when paired with the DAC then without.  Whenever I connected the lightning cable the iPod would think that the DAC was a power source for a brief second.  The DAC's power status also flickered during that brief second.  Not sure what's going on there.

Have you tried setting the Teac as the default playback devices on windows? My Fiio E18 does not have any audio output unless I checked it as default playback device on Windows 8.

Hello,
got my Teac HA-P50 today and I am very pleased by the sound. Way better than my Galaxy Note 2.

Perhaps you can answer me some questions:

1. When I connect the Teac via USB to my Galaxy Note 2 and power up the amp my Note starts charging. That`s nice, because so it never runs out of power but the Teac does.

Is there any possibility to stop my Note from discharging the Teac ?

2. When the Teac is connected to my PC and I power it up I can hear some hissing sound from the amp. It can`t be heard out of the headphones. The hissing sound comes from the amp itself. Sounds a bit like the mosfets of PC-VGA cards.

Is this normal ?

Best regards

Hello,

I tried to connect the amp to my LG Gpad 8.3 with the same result. Even if I connect it as PC device.
1 hour and the battery is empty.

With my iPad air and an old iPod 3rd Gen the Teac works as expected.
Seems like I have to send it back. That`s a pitty because soundwise the Teac is gorgeous.

Concerning to hissing the Teac makes this noise even when connected to a phone or iPad but then it`s not so loud.

Hello,
bought the Fiio E18 today. It works flawlessly. :)
Sound is a bit more analytic. Not as smooth as the Teac, but the differences are minor in my ears.
So for apple devices I would prefer the Teac.

It just arrived to me, so I won't express any opinion on the sound.

I connected it to a Nexus 7 and to an Iphone 3 and 3gs.
It works flawlessly with all the three devices, using the stock players.

I briefly tested id with a Grado PS500e and the level is completely satisfactory now, while it was too low using the Nexus or Iphone headphone output.

I noticed the same issue unfortunately, even after the firmware upgrade to the latest avaliable version (1.11). I want to check how this is decreasing the total battery life of the Teac, on the iOS devices it doesn't happen.

Thanks for your reply.
I tried using an OTG-Cable. Then it was vice versa. The Smartphone charged the Teac.

Do you hear any hissing sound out of the amp (not the headphones) when using it with PC or Smartphone ?

I owned the Teac P50 and had the same issue with andriod device. I checked with Teac Japan and got the reply that this was due to the andriod design so that they cannot help. The last time of P50 connecting with andriod device is about 2 hrs. We have to use the apple device for portable use or computer

Ok, thanks. So regarding hissing it seems as if my device was defective.
Like I wrote before, now I own the fiio E18. No problem here concerning charging/discharging, so why does Teac Japan say it`s because of android design?
That`s bad because I liked the sound of the Teac more than the analytic character of the fiio.

I found a solution here: http://www.avsforum.com/forum/173-2-channel-audio/1393599-enable-usb-audio-any-android-4-0-smartphone-tablet-9.html, but it implies an external battery and an Y otg cable, not very practical...
