I'm surprised there isn't more discussion around the Other Not Digital Thing, given that Jason is still expecting it to launch this year.

I am guessing that it is some thing to do with vinyl.

Or he is going to finally give in to common sense and make a  Vali of The Toad™ with TwiinTubes™,  VU Meters and Rich, Lithuanian ToadSkin® Klad Kontrol Knobs.  And for the excessively attentive, Schiit-KaBobbz®™!!  Amazing Anti-Vibrationalizationizing devices that do whatever you believe them to do.  But wait!  There's more...Schiit Anal-Og Bud-Pluggs®™.  Use to prevent signal leakage from unused inputs and outputs.

'n' sheit.

I would like a nice Integrated with some VU Meters but realize that I am in the minority.  Audio is at once a fun hobby and a serious bidness for a great many people.

I'll be in Hades...

We don’t need the studios, artists, listeners, and manufacturers bound into proprietary standards that can change arbitrarily to “drive” demand for new stuff. We don’t need to be like home theater or medical devices.

Can you please blow up the home theater market?  Pretty please?

Mike and Jason did an interview where home theater was discussed but said due to the limit in the hardware because of companies like Dolby they would never do that but who knows, things change. Mike did seem fairly emphatic on his position in the interview though

What happens when you outgrow your board supply house?

We'd be in millions of units annually.

Yeah, and I don't mean to belittle board supply houses. They typically do good work and it's not an easy task, but a board design is pretty simple to transfer from one house to another.

They all use mostly standardized industry practices, and if you buy a lot of boards, there's always another house courting you for your business.

The industry has lots of big, big board houses that can handle very large volumes.

You can also qualify second source vendors so you don't have all your eggs in one basket from a board supply perspective.

It's a bit of a trade-off. On the one hand, if you order everything from one vendor, you can usually get better economies of scale and thus lower prices, but if you split things up, you have a little bit of protection from supplier errors.

If one vendors machine goes down and they can't supply you parts for a couple of months while they retool, your other vendor can pick up the slack, etc.

From the Fulla 2 Press Release.

"Mike Moffat was the founder of Theta, Theta Digital, and Angstrom, and his audio history covers an impressive list of firsts, including the first standalone DAC, the Theta DSPre, the first use of digital signal processing and bit-perfect digital filter algorithms, the first DTS surround processor, and more."

I suspect that the fact that he has been there and done that also the forever moving target of standards set by other people along with everything else Mike Mentioned in the video it seems Unlikely. With all the super duper top secret projects they are working on they are at the point where they can set the standard instead of trying to follow it.

I am Curious as to the Channel Idea. The example of metal work in house is interesting but without a segregated facility any mass production will be hard. Metal work is dirty certian metals like aluminum gets everywhere. It would probably be almost like having a separate operation, You may need to Clone Alex to run it.

The home theater hobby could definitely benefit from modular, up-gradable components and separates.

**edit: Actually, Schiit could go all in with home theater with only two products. A 3-channel version of the Vidar and a modular, up-gradable multi-bit processor/preamp.

Yes, perhaps all of the above. I know, I know, I wish I could say more, but hey, even the simplest intros sometimes slip (cough…Freya…cough). And none of these things are simple. None of these things are “business as usual.” All of these things are pretty darn big ideas. Some of them can literally change the audio business.

“Change,” you say suspiciously. “I don’t like change. Other people talk about change, but then they want a bunch of money.”

I think you are being a bit modest when it comes to the level of change you guys have ALREADY brought to the audio business.

A true multibit DAC (not multi-level delta-sigma or based on some Sabre chip) for $249?  Insane.

I love mine, and I have to keep reminding myself how this guy was trying to (and still possibly is?) sell his homebrew R2R design for 12,000...

for only a board...

that needs to be run off of a car battery...

That's quite literally in comfortable 3 year old offlease CPO VW Golf territory, and in isnt even jewelry.  Just a board.

I've been very impressed with what you guys have done thus far, permanently changing the industry for the better, and look forward to what might come next.   I'm quite excited to find out what the nuclear option might be.   I probably won't be able to afford it, I bet, and it might not even be something I want, or targeted at consumers like me but I am very very curious :p

Actually not. It's not really a big thing. Just one of the surprises that are coming, not something I talked about.

Another unsaid thing: I'll keep writing this book as long as you keep reading! No matter if we succeed or fail on the big ideas, next year is gonna be interesting...

Do you think you'll do a post-mortem analysis of things that maybe didn't work out?   It's great to hear about new launches of course, and I hope all of the new big ideas come to fruition, but my curiosity is such that I'd want to learn about those things that didn't work out too, and why.

One aside: this sucker is now VERY dense. The new, larger heatsinks added a few pounds.

Sounds like it may need some packaging validation and transit testing.   It's always difficult to ship new, heavier products!

Emotiva seems to be going down that path already. Not saying its not possible but I think the gripe is really with the always new licensed connection type or tech thats already dictated to you which leaves little to the engineer/designer to do. Kind of like their stance on MQA
