Fake Senheiser IE800?

Hi desik

Sorry wrong interpretation.

Having been in this hobby for a long time I find it extremely disheartening knowing unscrupulous individuals are buying copies and then “knowingly” trying to sell them off as the genuine article at a large profit. Some will say it is the responsibility of the buyer to know what he is buying, and in some ways that is true, but these are not being sold off the back of a truck and in some instances from what I’ve read sold through dealers which makes it even worse.
I’ve personally spent over a couple of $1000 on Sennheiser headphones over the years (Hd410s, HD580s, 600s, 700, 800s..598 x2, ME2s...) not to mention all the others so getting these copies was really an itch to scratch seeing these things so cheap ($39US) and to see how they are made, hopefully my input and photos help potential buyers.
But it is getting scary seeing how good some of these extremely affordable phones coming out of China can sound compared to much more pricier units...and copies (fakes) are getting extremely close to the originals in looks and sound.
It wasn't until I actually saw threads like these that I actually discovered how far unauthorized manufacturers will go in duplicating a product...right down to the tiniest detail.

Thanks for clarification. It's good at least that my fakes were easy to figure out. The box is likely to be legit, however. Sennheiser site says "this code was checked quite frequent and is suspicious". They are now selling fakes in authentic boxes.

Please don't. You maintain the belief that someone can get a good deal by buying fakes. Let's at least help others avoid our mistakes.

Seller hesitates to accept return by the way. I hope ebay/paypal machinery is on my side. The ordeal is certainly not worth the trouble. Will keep you updated.
Ebay and PayPal are on your side. If the seller is selling Fakes as Genuine, and Ebay believes you, he is in deep trouble with Ebay. Ebay is ferocious on fake watches as well. They have no trouble with a seller selling an imitation as long as it is being sold as such. Here are two very old phone number for Paypal I have used in the past. 1-402-935-7733, 1-888-221-1161. I would love to try a set of fakes now that I know they exist. But nope, not going to support the counterfeiters. Thank you to @Rob80b for bringing the situation to light. Say, any one who has a fake set, why not take a hammer to them on the nearest concrete and see what they look like on the inside

Okay. One thing we should be keeping in mind. Head-fi is probably sponsored by Senn and other headphone companies. Advertising fakes here, is probably against the rules either way XD.

While saying that, ie800 is about hd800 bright level. Dude, what do you name bright if not hd800?

Seller first tried to negotiate a partial refund. After another exchange of messages he accepted a full refund. Good.

My IE800 had a weird sound signature, no tuning at all I guess. Bass muddy and uncontrolled. Maybe there are better fakes, but I hardly believe someone is going to hunt for them.

Hi desik

Any possibility to take some photos of the packaging and phones before returning to seller.
Although if they're have been sold as authentic and proven to be knockoffs I believe you not need to return them even though refunded.

I made photos, just in case this story gets longer. Will post them soon.

They need to be returned. Since the seller was selling under false pretenses you could ask for return shipping costs or, what I would do, is ask for them to send a UPS or USPS call tag for pickup from your location. THEN the seller may not be as interested in a return.

Maybe a local supplier has a legit demo copy pair on hand I can check out?

Ok…went to my local authorized dealer (Bay Bloor Radio) to compare the HD800Ss to the HD800s and they happened to have a pair of IE800s to audition and so I was able to do a direct comparison.

The cable on the copy is a little thicker and supple (wonder if there is any kevlar , probably not) and the actual colored weave is tighter in appearance.... the rubber collars were also very slightly thicker on the copy as noted by Vesperaudio and more rubbery looking and also had seams unlike the originals, the ceramic headphone shells themselves were more or less identical and difficult to see any difference.
Sound wise, I hate to say it, but they are very close, both sounded very good, excellent bass, sound-staging  but IMHO the real IE800s may have had the slight edge with a bit more treble and both could go very loud without distortion.

Right you are. Originals get stiff just like the cable do. Fake stays soft. They are made from different materials.

In my opinion the best fake that I've listened to have close graph shape but with more flabby bass, less detailed sound in whole range, higher level of distortion (with volume increasing).

Sounds like my Momentum in ear compared the IE800 copies.
