Grado Bushmills X - Grado's first closed-back headphone?

Hi sorry for my late reply. Flat out at work and been to head hifi show in Cambridge. I paid £180.00 for them new. Guy had them as to photograph for publicity. Do like them . There is a pair on eBay at the moment. Brand new never used.

Congrats, I love my Bushmills, they are one of the smartest buys I ever did.

FYI, the wooden crate that the Bushmills come in isn't sealed, so I could repack mine, and sell them as, new in the box.

Pardon my asking but what sound signature do these cans offer? Curious what a fully timbered closed air vent does to the sound.
TIA.

The Bushmills are not closed, they have openings on the Inside of the earcups.

I had a somewhat similar idea back in 2006 when I bought my first SR-60s and wanted to use them outdoors. Recently I started diving into the headphone community for real, and rather quickly combined my passion for whisky with grados in my mind. I'm glad to see that these things actually worked, but the sad truth about using oak from barrels, is that it looses it's hardwood properties to the maturation process as the spirit soaks into it and starts taking components. Of course I'm sure they used relatively young barrels for this.

@Corleone  indeed your comment about oak losing its hardwood properties bit me... the wood cups on my Bushmills cracked.  This propensity is not only due to brittle wood but to a design that has long expanses of 1/8" thin wood that make up the vents.

They sound great and act great.. just be super careful... treat them like china.  Do NOT put them on a T-shaped headphone stand and then put a heavy headphone on the other side... they will fly up like a light kid on a teeter totter when a heavy kid jumps on the other end.  Do NOT sleep in them... the weight of your head on them may push them in at the vents.  Keep them in their box.  And when you realize that the folded cardboard compartment that holds the cord is wearing out (after about 10 times!!), coil the cord, put a twist tie on it, and place it neatly between the earpieces.

Grado fixed mine and they are now flawless (they replaced the cups, and did it VERY quickly).  They sound GREAT!

A bit late to the party but I picked up a pair of these in eBay, apparently unopened and they do look very much like they have never been out the box.

First up, these things have a beautifully detailed and textured midband and no one has a voice with more texture than Tom Waits, so it had to be 'Small Change' on vinyl. Anyone that knows Waits will agree that 'Tom Traubert's Blues is the perfect track with which to audition the Bushmills Grados. They have the usual Grado signature sound but with more bass, and a lovely tuneful bass it is too. They are also the lightest and most comfortable Grado cans I've ever worn. I like them.

I tried them with fake G Cushions and they just didn't sound right, all that bass was lost and I was left with tinny treble. Are the genuine article likely to be that different?

Congratulations on acquiring perhaps the rarest, most sought Grado headphone! And in great condition, too!

Grado headphones generally are made to sound worse, not better, by changing the pad type from the original design, such as replacing the original flats of the Bushmills wth L bowls, even though all Grado pads fit all Grado headphones. Compounding the problem is using non-Grado pads... Grado actually uses multiple densities of foam that other manufacturers do not. The only headphone that many say can be improved by non stock pads is the GH-1, which comes with L bowls but can be improved, or at least changed from great to great, by the G Cush.

But I would not question that you got a genuine Bushmills X. Just stick with the original pads or the Grado new verson of the same pad, if the originals are worn.

I'm enjoying them with original pads which are pristine. These are far better than my SR325 and my current favourite cans.

Welcome and congratz!, in my opinion, the Bushmills represent THE greatest value of all Grados.

One great thing about Grado, is that you can ''tune'' the sound to your liking, by swapping earpads, so contrary to John, I invite you to try multiple earpad models on your Bushmills.

I have 6 pairs of Grados, and 4 of them don't have the original earpads, that they came with.

Just so you know, John is mistaking, the Bushmills don't originally come from Grado with L-cush, they come with S-cush, or like many people also call them ''comfies''.

Oh and John, no hard feelings Buddy!

Thanks for the welcome.

I went straight from comfies to G a cushions and didn't like what I heard. I might try my 325's L Cushions on them later today. Are my cheap fake G Cushions from Amazon going to be all that different from the real thing?

Actually called them flats, not L (should have said S, which are... Flats). Thanks!

I prefer the L cush over the original flats, gives a slightly deeper soundstage.

Just to be clear, the title of this thread is erroneous, the Bushmills are not closed, they're vented. Also, there are 4 different kinds of Grado earpads.

1) - The S-cush, a.k.a. comfies,

2) - The L-cush,

3) - The G-cush.

All of the above come as standard equipment on the current Grado line.

4) - The Flats, wich used to come stock on vintage Grados. The limited edition HP1000, and if I'm not mistaking, the RS1 also used to come with Flats.

From what I've read, TTVJ (Todd The Vinyl Junkie) has bought the remaining Flats that were left in Grado's inventory. They have a tendency to boost bass responce, and reduce treble extension.

Hope this helps.
