Let's say they do support streaming via 802.11n in a future model, what software are you guys planning to use for serving lossless files on the server side without downsampling / real-time transcoding at all?
A&K opted for their own protocol instead of relying on UPnP / DLNA for their AK240 / MQS Streaming combo. That might be able to avoid downsampling / real-time transcoding but not quite confirmed yet. English version of MQS Streaming Server should be available in the near future so we'll see
check out Lima. It was a kickstarter project and will only be ready in May, so no reviews yet though. Assuming the wifi iteration of Calyx supports Android appstore.
Well, my thinking was that they have very limited space, so the obvious place to make a 'land-grab' for [REW] [FFW] buttons would be in the void where the volume slider currently resides
...but just for you, here's an alternative hypothetical fake image:
I hope it sounds spectacular.... First impressions are coming in of the AK240 and it seems to be extremely good sounding. Since i want to buy the best there is available i hope Calyx M is up to it. April is a long way away when you are sitting and waiting. It will probably be more like May before any meaningful review or impressions come in..
VisceriousZero, you bought an AK240 didn't you ? Are you seriously looking at this as well ? That would be an interesting SQ shoot out.
FWIW, I really hope Calyx keep ALL the keys (except the power button) on one side of the unit (just like the NW-ZX1 & NW-F880):
Thankfully, Calyx had the good sense to put the power button at the top of the DAP, where it won't get mistakenly pressed, but the M could still end up being an ergonomic disaster if they put the [REW] [FFW] on the other side of the DAP from the volume control.
So, I'd like to see it approximately as it is in the above Photoshopped M pic, but with a normal button volume control as opposed to the slider; so something similar to either of the fake pictures below:
The slider may have a 'nice analogue feel', but the problem is that it is hazardous to one's hearing and to CIEMs. If you happen to have a wallet or a pen in your jacket pocket, when you slide the Calyx-M in, the corner of the wallet or the tip of the pen could very easily catch the volume slider and slide it to Maximum volume in a split second. That's really bad news and an extremely irresponsible design. A slider is also difficult to adjust accurately (and safely) in your pocket.
If the M was for desktop / bedside use only, then it wouldn't be a problem, but for pocket use, a slide is just bad news.
I like how they do listen to us. They got my attention completely. I will be waiting to see the impressions and I might even order one if it sounds really as good as described before (between Hugo and AK240).
