Bowers & Wilkins P7 - over the ear headphones

Does anyone else have creases in the leather headband when you stretch them outward? I have two pairs and the newer one forms creases as soon as you start stretching (to put them on your head).

The pair I was demoing at an Apple store also began to crease once they were stretched open beyond a certain point, and by that I mean just stretching them open wide enough to put on my head, and I have a somewhat narrow head.

It seemed that something had broken inside the headband.

But remember, the demo pair I was using I'm sure had seen a lot of abuse, so it shouldn't be that big of a problem for an owner (unless they have an unusually large head, then it could become an issue).

But creasing issues aside, these are some of the best sounding "mainstream" headphones I've heard, and I've heard most of the major contenders.

They really do sound as good as they look!!!

I have used the x5 with p7's for some time. From what I have read on the forums you would have to spend at least twice the money for better e.g. iriver's music servers. To me this is a winning combo...

I'd go with ibasso dx90, more refined, better designed, expandable upto 2tb with an external drive if I remmeber :) it seemed more refined when I last tried it. Though I ended up going for an AK instead..

Been using B&W p7 headphones for about 4 months now. I use fiio x3 as an audio source and I play flac tracks. The B&W p7's is really bassy with clear and warm sounding mids. Much bassier than my ATH M50's actually. I found out that when I toggled the gain of fiiox3 to high, and set its bass level on 6 to 8, The bass tends to become a rattling vibration which is really annoying and unbearable. I was quite disappointed as I love to play bass heavy music like Massive Attack and White Stripes and that these $400 headphones aren't able to handle some tracks which the $150 ATHm50s are able to... I went back to the store for replacement but found out that other BW P7's have the same issue.. I hope to know if anyone here has experienced the same issue with these headphones. Thanks (I'm a newbie here on headfi btw.)

Hu???

I love them and of course listen to Massive Attack, esp. Mezzanine and Live at Melt 2010. Work perfectly. No Bass issue at all. They are also really really good at producing Moog Taurus type of bass(lines) used within Progressive Rock by the likes of Genesis and Pink Floyd.......

However, I don't use them as a mobile headphone - mobile phones and pads aren't good enough to drive them.
Only local and via the Meridian Prime Headphone Amp and PSU and in the past with the Meridian Explorer.

Do the P7's rattle on these same songs if you leave your FiiO X3 set to flat rather than boosting the bass?

Hi everyone i've been using my P7's for one week only. Everything like materials used, sound quality is perfect but i have concerns about volume level. I am using P7's with my iphone and spotify extreme level (320 i think), even the maximum volume level is not so high i think. I compared these with my friends Monster DNA and DNA's level is higher. Is it normal for a quality headphone to sound like this? Are P7s maximum loudness level not so high? I am a bit new to hifi headphones, i read many many good reviews about P7, but i am a bit disappointed about this sound level. Thanks in advance.

I think you're simply comparing the P7's to headphones that may be a bit easier to drive, not that the P7's are a difficult load. I get a lot more clean volume from my P7's when they're driven by my FiiO X3 or X3 and E12 (via line out) versus my Sansa Clip Zip+. I can play them loud with the Clip, but the sound starts to sound a tad distorted as the Clip is running out of juice. As far as an inability of the P7's to play loud, I haven't found that to be an issue and I use them with my Gungnir and Asgard 2 or FiiO X3 & E12 just about every day.

You could always add the FiiO E11k or E12 Mont Blanc to use with your portable source. Good luck.

Thank you for your quick and detailed answer. From what i understand, if i continue to listen via my iphone or laptop, it is normal that the loudness level will not be so high? (i thought maybe mines are defective after comparing them to DNA's) If i want to enhance the volume level, i can achieve this by using an amplifier and another player right? Thanks.

You can certainly add an amp like the FiiO E11K or E12 or anything other amp of your choice to get more clean volume from your source. I can play the P7's pretty loud with my Sansa Clip Zip if the volume is almost all the way up yet the FiiO X3 drives them easier. So, it just depends on your source and the juice its putting out. The P7's can play very loud...louder than you'd want listen to for very long. Good luck, you'll be fine.

For the p7 I have been using the fiio e12 diy, it's been a great combo through the line out of the x5, the p7 benefit greatly from a good amp, and one designed for clarity.
. But I think for the p7 the new fiio e12a has the ideal amount of power it has the perfect op amp and would be ideal for the job, giving the greatest amount of usable volume control

Hi. Thank you for the fast reply. The answer would be no. Fortunately when I set the bass on zero to three, the tracks lose their rattling effect. I still could not rule out if the problem is on my heaphones, my audio source (fiio x3) or just the recorded file (flac)

Yeah there's no doubt in my mind that the B&W P7's scale very well for a $400 headphone. They sound better (to me at least) when using the X3 along with the E12 and sound even better from the Gungnir and Asgard 2 combo. A friend of mine brought over his Bryston BHA-1 headphone amp and we used the Gungnir and Bryston BDA-1 as sources and the P7's sounded stellar with any of those combinations. There aren't a lot of closed headphones that I truly enjoy as I usually prefer planar headphones yet when driven by a good source and amp I think the P7's really shine. If I use my Sansa Clip Zip+ (love the Clip for the $) the sound is a quite a bit more closed in than if I use the FiiO X3 on its own. I need to get my hands on a FiiO X5, but thus far it hasn't been at the top of my "to do" list. With regards to home gear I find that the P7's sound GREAT with several of the Schiit Audio amps.
