Sony NWZ-ZX1 - 35th Walkman Anniversary model - Page 244

Confused, other than UI and physical size difference, if running to an outboard DAC then why would you not just be happy with the ZX1? (Especially with UAPP!) that, once again isn't a bash against the AK players, but a legitimate question.

I still have no idea what to excpect though.. I find the XBA-4 to be completely unfit for music with even the slightest hint of distortion, making them effectively useless for about 95% of my collection (for the remaining 5% they're absolutely brilliant). On the other hand, I have been VERY happy with my MDR-EX500 (dynamic) and the way they rendered everything I threw at them. After four years of constant use they finally fell apart and I'm still looking for a worthy replacement. Only one way to find out if the H1 is it... smile_phones.gif

Yeah I wonder if I was too hasty returning, I love bass too listening to subfocus, magnetic man and chase and status, but I also listen to classical, trance, heavy metal, so wanted a clearer top end. It may have been that my Hi-MD player and HTC One weren't powering the high impedance of them well enough. Let us know Wnuwk Siphon wink.gif

I've used this combo since the ZX1 came out. Prior to this I used the X3 and Sony Z1 (phone).

For me, there's no doubt the ZX1 is tops. Compared to the other two, I find the ZX1 brings a slight shimmer to the highs and the bass is tighter.

Typically, I don't last long before eyeing another product, but this hasn't happened yet.

I undertsand the ZX1 can't play DSD files but can it store and output via the USB?

I've not been successful in that so far.

I don't think it can decode the DSD... how can it output thru USB?

We could simply embed DSD files (*.DSF / *.DFF) inside FLAC files by following the instructions here

For this step, Foobar is used as a file converter, not a media player.  These instructions are for a Windows PC since that’s what I use.  You may already have Foobar and FLAC installed on your PC.

1.   Install Foobar2000: http://www.foobar2000.org

2.   Install FLAC Frontend: http://download.cnet.com/windows/seek-s-encoder-frontends/3260-20_4-10055779.html

3.   Download the "foo_input_packeddsd.dll" file and place it in the C:\Program Files\foobar2000\components folder: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B4jZ4NDGECzEczBjYVByNUdjdDg

4.   Start Foobar and go to "File->Preferences ->Components" to make sure "foo_input_packeddsd.dll" shows up in the installed components box.

  •     ASIO Driver Mode: DSD
  •     PCM Sample Rate: 176400
  •     DSD2PCM mode: DSD over PCM
  •     Click on "Enable Tags"

6.   Use "File->Open” to load DSF or DFF files for conversion into a Foobar playlist.  Highlight all the files in the playlist, right click and select "Convert".  Choose the “…“ option and set FLAC as the output format.  Set other conversion options (output folder, file name pattern, etc.) here.  My preference is to set the sub-folder name to “artist - album” and file name to “nn. title”.

7.   Hit the “Convert” button to begin the batch conversion process.  The first time you run conversion you will be prompted for the location of FLAC.exe.  Most likely it’s in C:\Program Files\FLAC Frontend\tools.

8.   Some DSF metadata will carry over to the DoP encoded FLAC file but cover art will need to be reattached.  Cover art and metadata in the DoP FLAC file can be edited just like any other FLAC file.  I add “(DSD DoP)” to the end each folder name and album title to differentiate it from the same album in other formats.

9.   Before batch converting a bunch of files, convert a few test files, index them in LMS, and play them to make sure they decode as native DSD.

10.   If the files don’t play back correctly, Check the following:

  •     Verify that all four parameters on the "File->Preferences ->Tools->SACD" Foobar screen are configured as documented above.
  •     Verify that the EDO app is installed and configured correctly on the SBT.  Every time the SBT’s firmware is updated, EDO must be reinstalled and configured.
  •     Verify that the PCM stream from the playback software to the DAC is PCM bit-perfect.

That’s it.  Once the files are converted by Foobar and indexed in LMS, you’re ready to enjoy your DSD music through the Squeezebox Touch.

Final steps 9 and 10 could be different but still somewhat similar to ZX1. I don't have USB DAC with DSD decoding to test yet since Korg MR2 could only handle files stored on SD cards.

@seeteeyou

I will try this over coaxial out from HM901 when I get the Hugo.............. presuming this approach will work over coaxial and will not freeze the player... :D

still a lot of trouble to play an album

Yeah, that's just such a pain to deal with when nobody wanna write an Android app for ZX1 like Onkyo HF Player. That's why we still couldn't have DoP coming through USB OTG or WMC-NWH10 yet,

For native DSD decoding with internal hardware, we actually have access to relatively affordable + flagship Android phones with ES9018K2M already (Vivo Xplay 3S and TCL idol X+ S960) but nobody could find a way to take advantage of that except for those engineers from Calyx yet

Afternoon fellas. I'm just wondering which of my audiophile chums has had a chance to compare this lovely looking device with the AK120? ZX1 seems like cracking value, but other than storage I'm wondering if there would be any other negatives coming over from the AK device?

Quite a few on this thread have switched from 120 to the ZX1, others in other threads have remained with the 120. Some say the 120 is more "neutral" some say the ZX1 is more "musical" and has a wider soundstage, I for one love them both but like the ZX1 better due to UI and SQ tastes. But as we all say, YMMV

Is this site legit?

699 is a great price. All my 3 walkmans (X,Z & F) together cost less than the ZX-1 but add up more than 128GB!

Accessoryjack are legit. Sony products always come down in price a while after release.

we pre-ordered in October if I remember right.

Japan's taxes should increase in April '14 from 5% to 8%. However I thought that's for locally used/consumed products/services. So called "duty free" shouldn't change?
