A couple of notes on modifying the firmware.
1) It's easy to enable adb, see /bin/openadb in original firmware and modify build.prop accordingly. Or just download https://mega.co.nz/#!Ih5QTJzI!0DXEqNgJBWeK1QFqTeOhXW5KaH6LP4Vi0M38Wtd2PZM
(WARNING, not for end users - adb will replace mass storage USB mode).
2) Sound system is OpenMAX-based, and among other things it has an ALSA sink, see /dev/snd.
That means that you can, for example, compile https://github.com/tinyalsa/tinyalsa using android ndk and play wav files with tinyplay bypassing original mangoplayer.
If any other developers interested, we could try to port rockbox or make some improvements to original firmware.

Hi all,
Several weeks ago, I asked for recommendations for a headphone that would be good with the DX50 un-amped. I received several good suggestions including the Audio Technica ADH-900 (discontinued) and the newer ADH-900X.
That does look like a good fit but while doing additional research here on Head-Fi I learned of he Sony MDR-MA900 fully open headphone. This is also discontinued by Sony but still available new from some sellers on Amazon. (I got mine from Yogi Computers in the US)
I'm a noob to all things Head-Fi and have been using the Sony MDR-V6 until now and really like it's detail and flat signature so I decided to give the MA900 a try. I won't go full review here as there are many very good reviews already on Head-Fi but I will say that I'm quite pleased with this match with the DX50. "Kind of Blue"=Kind of awesome!
My goal was to find a good open headphone for home listening straight out of the DX50 without the need for an amp. I'm loving these things! They are extremely light and sound fantastic. This has a huge soundstage, great instrument separation and very balanced sound with what I think is a flat signature like the V6. Can't really find a good graph online as these were only part of Sony's line for a little over a year.
So, check out the MDR-MA900 if you have similar needs. Listening to Buddy Guy & Junior Wells "Alone and Acoustic" now. Good stuff on the DX50.

Yes, the DX50, to me is one of the most musical daps to come along and enjoy it even if another dap has more detail. It is extremely to ever get the kind of detail we want on a dap or play back system, in live music. The reason it is desired in a playback system is to make up for the fact, that it isn't live or actually in the studio. So we compensate by asking for over the top detail, hall sounds and so on, and I fall right in there with my desire but to me the DX50 balances all this so very well.
At the price of the DX50, it is a pleasure and would be even for much more money, IMO.

After 6 hours use I really have only one query, aside from the delay on pausing, why does the volume still operate the LO? Line Outs should be a fixed voltage. This reminds me of the Studio's HDMS feature.
Aside from that its a wonderful piece of kit.

I use Grado's GS1000i with my Clip Zip without an amp and it works great, so I assume you would get a similar result with the DX50.

I use Minerva Mi-Performer Pro ciem's and AKG K545 headphones with no amp at all between them and the DX50

I don't see why you think a LO signal should be fixed. The signal from a preamp ia still a line signal and is not fixed. Somewhere you have to have line attinuation. Also more and more dacs and cd players have variable LO with the volume control done in the digital domain, my Audioquest CD8200 included

Some LO implementations have fixed volume and not affected by the player's volume control. As for DX50, Ibasso implemented the volume control at the DAC level which controls volume for both HO and LO.

I cant see any reason for using volume in a line out unless you are going straight to a power amp. Is this the same on DX100 and DX90?

Volume on the LO can be usefull as you can adjust it to get the best use of your amps volume control.
Use velcro to attach the dap to amp

Use velcro
I just put 2 bands to fix my amp. One below the screen and button, another below the button.
