I see. Thanks for the explanation. Is one "better" than the other?

There is no straight answer. It will always depend on the recorded material and headphone. In most case, the difference is subtle to nothing at all. Try it and see if you can hear any difference.

i got the one driver to load by signing it myself and disabling checks. The dx50 itself still only shows up as "Mango Device/rk2928sdk" and installing the driver fails with the message that a service can't be started... strange...
*edit* it works now :) it was really a disabled service. does anybody know what these strange settings and sliders do in the windows audio setting panel of the dx50?

as far as i know is your need to go back on the stock recovery since the ibasso FW extension is .IMG..CWM is can only flash .ZIP files..

1. make sure that you only have stock_recovery.zip on your dx50 internal memory.
2. boot to recovery then install zip from sd card > choose zip from external sdcard

If all fails.. Try to remove the battery and try it again..

Thanks for the answer, but that is part of my problem. Since the DX50 does not boot any more, I can only put files on the SD-card. Or is there any other way to access the DX50's internal memory? It only shows up as an external memory device on my computer if it has already booted it's own OS – and, like I said, that does not work any more …

your computer can still identify your dx50.. you can try using the rkbatchtool to return it to its stock recovery and FW IMO

New firmware is now listed at iBasso>Download.  Downloading it now.  Curious as to what it brings to the party other than DAC, which I have no interest in.  Now folder to folder play, crossfade transitions, that would be nice.  Or, for those of you with issues, better gapless (works fine for me).  I'll report back once it finishes downloading and I install it.

Edit:

"Improvements with this firmware:
1. USB-DAC function added.
2. USB Settings added. (storage, DAC, and charge only options)
3. Touch screen sensitivity has been adjusted.
4. Improved read speed for exFAT formatted SD cards.
5. Optional digital filter added.
6. Rescan Library function added.
7. Power off confirmation screen removed."

Thanks. I have DOC2008's 'Mega Sound Explosion' currently on mu DX50. Can I upgrade directly to the new firmware, or do I have to restore the unit to "factory settings" first?

I really like the sound of the new FW.

Same. It sounds slightly darker than 1.2.8 to me. It seems like iBasso increased the bass and reduced the treble. Soundstage feels smaller to me; more intimate but more 3-dimensional and holographic (rendering of depth is better). Vocals are the best I've heard on any of the firmwares.

Had the classic freeze at end of media scan, did a restart and all was fine.  Don't notice much if any sound difference (using a C5 amp from LO).  They've pretty'd up the splash screen and the directory screen (clearer font and nicer folder pictures, I think).  I like the no reminder shutdown screen.  The digital filters don't seem to be doing much (at least using iems, I don't hear much difference).  I'm not sure if they changed the sound signature at all.  Still sounds really good to my ears.  But I don't use it for DAC, so ehh.  Was really hoping for much functional changes.  I don't like Rockbox, so I guess it'll be same old/same old.

Guys, help me out here, I'm really really sturggling with what to purchase. I've ruled out the X3, but I can't decide on whether to get the DX50 or the X5, if I get the X5, I'll only be using it with the RHA MA750's for a while, but if I go the DX50, I can get it sooner (like, now, instead of waiting till August for the X5), and I can also but the Philips Fidelio X1 as I was wanting an over ear can. Do you think I should wait and upgrade to the X5? Is the SQ jump big enough? Or get the cans and the DX50? I MAY (very maybe) be able to get the DX90 second hand as it is very expensive in the UK. Sorry for all these questions, any answer would be greatly appreciated! Btw, I'm currently using a Galaxy S5 for my music so I was wondering if the jump to just an X3/DX50 would be big enough?

Thanks
