[Review] Superlux HD681 EVO
Apr 3, 2015 at 10:26 AM Post #602 of 911
Find myself listening to my EVO more and my HD668b less and less. I initially liked the 668 more but somehow that changed and now I reach for the EVO 9 out of 10 times. Maybe it's time to sell off the 668, great headphone for the price though...

I think when you initially hear the EVO after the 668 your overwhelmed by the bass but after the foam mod and a little adjusting its really a great headphone. Whereas the HD668 is a inexpensive neutral\analytical headphone the EVO is an inexpensive laid back rockin' bassy headphone. It walks that line of being really fun to listen to while not getting too crazy with low end. I personally prefer a more neutral even across the frequencies sound but must admit the EVO is fun to listen to. I hear it's a cheap mans HD650 don't know if that's true. I do have the HD600 and they are very different and not in the same league IMHO.
If I do sell off the HD668b I still will keep the EVO, it's just more fun.

HD600 and HD650 are very different. Like the Sky and an Ice cream. xD

Personally I love Evos my timbre and bass over 668B's, but I miss 668B's detail, I also tried some mods, like changing Pads for other Chinese pads that according to Solderdude makes Evos "flat". Those pads made my Evos sound awful, less Sub-Bass than 668B and more treble than 668B. Maybe I chose a wrong pair. xD

Stock Evos are great!

Maybe I'll keep my 668's now that you say you miss yours...

hi guys, really new here I usually just read, not comment. Been reading this thread for last couple of hours.

I'm expecting a Superlux HD681 Evo in a few days from my local dist. its supposed to be the new version with extra pad.

just a few question for seasoned EVO user here,

1. Will my Iphone 5 drive this well?

2. would it benefit from portable amp? my main source is Iphone 5, mostly with 320 mp3s and Spotify or alac if I really like the track.

3. any recommendation on cheap portable amp?

I'm in no hurry to stack new hardware since i'm relatively new to this hobby  but if its a must then I guess its the only way to go.

thank you for this wonderful community

some people used fostex hp-p1 dac/amp for idevice, but its not cheap anymore, or you can consider the fiio

Welcome fairx! Since you use spotify,  make sure you buy an amp that is well shielded from interferences of your cellphone. I have topping nx1, but it is unusable with spotify. When I play mp3's with my phone it is ok but internet action causes distortion sound, hiss, clicks and pops. That shielding issue leaves you with few options:

1. Not amping
2. Ditch spotify and get a cheap amp
3. Use spotify and get more expensive amp

Thank you for the clear answer. My evo should arrive later today and I'll try them first.

Maybe I should consider dap / dac since I'll be using them with pc too

I've read they are more similar than different with the HD650 having more bass and the HD600 being more mid and high end oriented. I love my HD600 but always wondered what the HD650 sounded like...

Well, I´ve read that HD650 have less highs and more bass than HD600, HD600 is flat an analytical headphone and I've even read people complaining about that they´re too analytical and boring while HD650 is more "fun".

Maybe, MAYBE with EQ you can get close to the HD650 but Im not sure about it.

This is like 681 Evo vs 668B.

I can tell you emphatically that the HD600 is not boring. Might try the HD650 if the price is right. Right now I'll have to listen to the EVO's and enjoy which won't be too difficult.
