New Schiit! Ragnarok and Yggdrasil

Read the (p)review on the internet and you'll see more plain comparisons to get a sense of the sound. I promise it'll be a less ambiguous look at the sound.

Zerodeefex, thanks for the review at the other place!  I like your tone, though there is no need to defer so much to other people's preferences for lack of detail --- it hard to 2nd guess other people with other preferences.

One question: how can it take 6 hours for the pre-production Yggy to warm up?  I can see 2 yours, but 6 hours just seems odd.  And how does the production version fix that?  Is it something along the line of the Rag processor control?  If so, that seem like something you'd want to do in a less close to production version.  Is 'warm up' shorthand for some other phenomena?

2299 is too high for a dac alone..
If they want sales, then that figure needs to come down or it will be a niche item for the well to do...

I predict they'll sell everyone they can make for quite some time. Those who have had time with it understand what it is - that it's in a class by itself.

Absolutely.  If it's a niche product then I'm in that niche, and $2300 is more than affordable to me.

I just wish it came in black (ducks and runs)

Well, the Yggy I tested had a few minor things that have changed in the newer version. The big one, though, is the choke input power supply was using a lower inductance choke in the power supply. The new chokes have 6x the inductance and that, coupled with clean up of a few minor things here and there in the .99 unit apparently have made it warm up way way faster. According to Mike Moffat himself, they "will make the power supply mojo twirl in rapturous ecstacy." I am inclined to believe him.

Thanks.  Not sure how a lower inducance chock could make any difference to warm up at the time scale of hours.  Unless it is something different than 'warm up'.  I'm happy to believe the Yggy is terrrific, but this sort of thing makes me suspect marketing obfuscation.

On the warm up thing - has nothing to do with the choke. It's the output stage FETs, bias currents. According to Jason, they are tweaking that part of the circuit so it's more stable across temperature. The proto Yggy was on the bright and twangy side when stone cold taken in from the outside. This same Yggy proto while at RMAF had been left on for days ad what Misterrogers and Maxvla's impressions were based on. At the SoCal mini-meet, we religiously took steps to have it plugged in and left on at all times.

Thanks.  That makes more sense.  Sounds like the Rag.

Well, this is me eating crow for propagating incorrect info. Editing my previous post to point to yours.

So how good of a DAC is this? Better than a Hugo?

If you read purrin's thread, it's better than any of the DACs he has heard, regardless of price. Note that not everyone shares purrin's opinion of the Hugo, but that's a discussion that has run its course - as with any comparison, you really need to hear both side-by-side with your music and your partnering gear

If I can be allowed one observation, it's simply that there is a honeymoon period with any new gear where a slew of Head-fiers profess to being madly in love with their new toy, followed by a more sober appraisal of its strengths and weaknesses and, eventually, an acceptance that it wasnt 'all that'.  For those of us who purchased the Hugo shortly after it's release, the majority are now in that second phase and that gives Yggy a massive advantage straight out of the gate. Live with the object of your desire long enough - regardless of your initial lust - and I'm confident that you'll find a flaw or three but right now this is the picture purrin and others have painted for Yggy in the minds of many here.

Here we go with a Yggy status as of January 2015

The Yggy has been released to production as of today! So What does that mean??

1. The production version Yggy has been qualified – we have two working production Yggys with no engineering issues.

2. The production version 1.0 PCBs are complete and released to order, along with all other production parts previously released.

3. The PCB board house has been notified of the upcoming 6 different circuit boards for the Yggy to be scheduled along with all other Schiit PCBs.

4. Schiit Material control will now begin kitting and ordering parts shortages to send to the board house.

The only bad news is that my time target to have this done was the first of the year – I am 9 days late.

I have very mixed feelings about turning a product over to production, particularly one of this complexity. In the process so far, I have been in complete control. One of my other pastimes is to direct local stage plays. In the rehearsal portion of that process, I place and tweak the actors, sounds, lights, and set pieces. Once the show opens it is turned over to a stage manager who calls every sound cue, light cue, scene setup, prop placement, etc., etc. The subsequent loss of control can only be comforted by choosing the best possible creative and production crews.

So it goes with turning products over to production. I have a very high degree of trust in all involved. The first two real Yggys have been built. The problem is that I am now totally dependent on other key players to make many more of them.

They will – they always have.  I even believe they may do so by 9 days past 1Q 2015.  Not terrible since this DAC has really been in development since the early 1980's and it uses as its digital base an algorithm developed 96 years ago.  It is all so relative.

I saved the best for last! The price has been maintained. No increases!!!

The best to all of you and thanks for your patience.

Sensational effort, Mike - kudos to yourself, Jason and all the team for making this a reality and coming in at your projected price. Now, about that limited edition run of black Yggdrasil .....  :D

(btw, it was the photo of Miss Johannson that forced you to break radio silence, wasn't it ?)

Middle of April then?, is that a definate maybe?.

What's a few months, one way or another?, we've been waiting since 1983 or so!

It'll give Mr.Purrin time to sell another couple hundred units.

And, you'll have a few exciting months of Head-Fi discussions to observe and referee.

Well, you all can probably guess based off my two day (p)review, I'm going to do everything within my power to be the first to order one of these. Thank you for the update, Mike!
