The Fiio X5 Thread

Also, in your guys opinions, do you think it will be easier to rip all the music from my iPod (160GB, all perfectly tagged with album art) and convert them back from Apple Lossless to FLAC? That may be just as tedious. Maybe I will just redo all my tags, and make sure everything is perfect and fill out every tag (even if the X5 can't read them, it's a nice peace of mind)

Why do you want to convert the ALACs to FLACs? The X3/X5, and DX50/DX90 all handle ALACs. If you are going to do it, just use CLD to convert. It's much, much faster than re-ripping!

Oh wow it doesnt work with the year tag? Yikes. Maybe I will just use Kid3 then.
And yeah I quickly opened XLD and went to File > Open folder as a Disc, and there you can edit album art and metadata (I suppose minus the year? That's a big one for me)

So, you can do it - but only one album at a time. Is that right? If so, I'll stick with Media Rage. I can batch process loads of files.

I don't have a legit reason to be honest.. probably just for aesthetic reasons. Totally pointless I know.. maybe I just won't bother! That would save some headaches.

And yeah XLD I think can only do one album at a time. Not sure if Kid3 can do large batches, but if not I think I may end up buying Media Rage. I still would like to tag all my original FLAC files I think, instead of just using what I already tagged for my iPod.

I just like things to be nice and organized :)

Another thing I am debating: Should I bother adding album artwork to every single FLAC file if the X5 will be able to display a single folder.jpg in the future? Hmmmm..

Might be better for FW update or your files will get bloated, I am going to wait

Well it was promised in the early days of the X3, so you are probably best to use a method which works now.
I remember thinking that folder.jpg was universal until I bought a Cowon S9, which insisted on cover.jpg. A bulk rename was relatively painless.
Then came the X3 - I had never heard of a .jpg for each file before and refuse to use it. Flacs copied to X3 and X5 are quickly embedded using Mp3tag, but this doesn't work for .mp3 or .dsf although they have the same tags, so my workaround here is to rename the cover.jpg to the first track in the album when transferring. Yes, I only get the album art on the first track, but it works for me.
Support for cover.jpg across all formats will be very much welcomed, if and when it is provided.

XLD can convert everything in a tree of folders all in one go. Just open the top folder and it'll pick up everything in the subfolders up to a nesting limit you can specify. I set mine to unlimited and reconvert my entire collection of FLACs to higher rate TVBR AAC files every time I upgrade my equipment sufficiently to hear the difference between FLACs and the AACs I already have.
If you're converting a lot, it may take a long time to open up the progress dialog but have faith, it's never let me down with my 10,000 tracks yet....

Yup I'm aware of that one, had to do huge batch conversions for my iPod! XLD rocks!

I don't think you can do that. I think @HarryHardcase meant you can tag FLACs during the ripping process. That's what I do but have found that XLD doesn't embed the YEAR tag in FLACs for some reason.

If you can use XLD for stand-alone tagging, I'd be very surprised and would definitely want to know that.

I heartily recommend you file that FLAC issue as a bug, the dev has always seemed to me to be keen to make his app as comprehensive and as bug free as possible.  You might get a fix in a matter of days, he releases frequently (or he used to anyway).

Stand-alone tagging is probably possible if you set the transcoder in preferences to the same format as your input.  I don't know if that's ideal though.

New release about 3 days ago!

I've had a good listen to my brand new X5 today with Shure E500 and ACS Custom Moulds and also my HD650's with my E12, so far I am a little disappointed as the treble sounds very harsh and the bass has no real extention to it.

I hope very much that a few hours of burning in will help to change my listening experience.

How do you other X5 fans find it now you have put a few hours listening on the clock.

Good idea to file bug. Thanks for the recommendation.

I had the same feeling at first.  It took a few weeks for mine to get smoother at the high end and extend the bass.  Also make sure you install the new firmware that just came out: version 2.00
