The Fiio X5 Thread

He's talking about running an amp.  If you run a cable from the HO to an external amp, you now have two amps running in-line.  Probably not the best thing to be doing.

And I agree the HO is very capable.  For iems or headphones.

I know this might seem like a weird question, but when u plug in the fiio x5 or dx90 into ur computer and use it them as a soundcard, how do they fair for watching movies, tv shows, gaming and the like? sorry if this isnt the place to ask it i just want another excuse to buy myself either one of those DAPs. thanks

I'm finally finding time to do the whole use this don't use it phase of having ALL brand new gear at once without fully appreciating what each change actually makes. Being a full time student at 52 and working doesn't allow me much downtime if any to A/B my toys.
I by chance decided to plug my IEM's into the X5 without the amp and instantly found the sound to be more musical and the volume control much more finely grained. I had lost all recollection of how much more controlled the output is using the X5 alone. I had been laying in bed listening to my music each night for about an hour and a half using the X5 and E12A together since everything showed up here about a month or so ago. So last night I did the same thing without the amp. My immediate thought...the X5 sounds superb all on its own and I think that the majority of people will never find a need for an external amp. But, though there is less fine output control at least with the amp I'm using...I greatly prefer the punchiness of the bass with the amp.

Say what?  Music players.  They play music.  They are not iPods.  If you want to listen to music at a much better sound quality than an iPod, get one.  If you want to do what you suggest, probably an iPod is your best bet.

What's a HO?
Also if u use the line out, u bypass the internal amp, but not the internal dac right?

Volume should be all the way up out of the LO what does this mean?

Clearer - less distorted sound, is this really a very noticeable thing?
At which volume levels are we talking when you can start to notice improvements?
You pretty much always want to use line out with an amp.  You are turning off the X5 amp and using the external amp you purchased.  You should be getting clearer (less distorted) sound that way.  Volume should be all the way up out of the LO, and then the amp would be your control point.

I'm upping a video I'll put in this post.

The line out is better than headphone out with the e12

X5 (headphone out)  to e12 input then e12 headphone out to cans
v.s.
X5 (line out) to e12 input then e12 headphone out to cans <<<<<winner...clearly...why??

of note is

Between 1:50 and 1:52 an event takes place. I dunno what it was but it allowed me to do what i couldn't do with headphone out.
 Very odd.

Love the sound.
Would like a eq that had more range than +6dB though...please
redface.gif

someone posted already, turn everything down in eq, and bass up, you get a 12 db difference between bass and the rest. So not only raise the bass, but turn everything down...

also, it is normal that you will love line out feed into line in of the amp... Something about the qualityes of the electric signal, about Voltage and Intennsity.

Headphone Out
AMP
What it says- though I believe that the X5's Line Out is pre-set at full volume.  If not, turn the volume control on the unit to full.
Noticeable? To me, yes.  To you?  I can't speak to what/how you hear.  I would assume you would notice it.
I don't understand the question.

Yep, put all the sliders UP and then lower the ones you want to decrease.  For our basshead

that would mean all of the bass sliders up and the rest lower, then play with volume control.

Boom boom boom.

Has anyone tried this sd card?  Its $57 from amazon.  They even have a 256mb, but if I understand, the max for each slot on the x5 is 128mb?

I own 2 headphones and with both I have no need to use the equalizer. I think, it is a good option to buy a good headphone instead using a equalizer to make a bad headphone better.
