I'm pretty sure you just taught me something @olddude

BTW, do you use XLD a to rip CDs to FLAC? If so, does set the Year tag for you? It never does for me.

this just shows,
you're never to old to learn teach! ;P

Put your music in a folder on your desktop or anywhere on your Mac, desktop is good because you don't have to look for it.  Open the app.  Go to XLD>File and pull the drop down.  Choose "Open a Folder."  Direct it to your folder.  Click to open the folder.  Choose it.  Your music will show up in a window.  Go to Get MetaData.  If you have an actual album, the chances are it will name your tracks and add the photo.  If not, see if there is more in the dropdown.  If not, you will need to go manual. Either way, your next stop is Edit MetaData.

Go to Edit MetaData.  It will give you a popup of track 1.  If Get MetaData worked, the info is already listed (track name, artist, etc.).  Check to see if it is correct.  I tend to remove everything except for track name, artist name, album name.  Everything.  YMMV.  Hit NEXT and do track 2, then so on.

If no data popped up because you have a selection of songs that are not an album, or the album is not identified, you will have to manually add each field.  When you finish the first, press Next.  Go through the entire group of songs.  I tend to copy and paste artist name throughout, then  album name (it can be the actual album name or, if you are making a compilation,  "Songs" or "Best" or whatever you want).  THEN I enter the track name, which is time consuming.  At the end of this, go to Google and search for a picture (either the actual album art or a picture that you like if it is a compilation you are making).  Double click it, then drag it to the desktop.  Then pull it into the little box at the upper left of the window.

When you finish, press OK.  The tracks will show up in numerical order.

Go to XLD Preferences and choose the file format (FLAC, etc.) from the pulldown. You can also choose a Save folder if you wish.  I don't.

Then press Transcode and direct it to the Save spot (I keep an untitled folder on the desktop for this).  Then press Go and it will pop up a new window that shows each track being transcoded.  When it finishes (you will know because it will show you), go to your untitled folder and check that the files are in there.  Then rename the folder with the Artist name followed with a space and then the Album name (Neil Young Trans) or if a compilation you put together Neil Young Best or Neil Young Songs or whatever word you want.  That is how it will show up in your Fiio.  Make sure the album name in the MetaData you entered or is chosen is the same as the folder name.  Drag that folder into your Fiio or your card via USB.  Scan.  Done.  Oh, and create a new untitled folder on the desktop for the next album.

It will also rip a CD you have mounted on your system.  Follow the same procedure.

Hey olddude...a ton of helpful information - thanks!  I am in the process of working through everything now.  A quick question, what if the files are already in FLAC format, and I don't need to perform any audio conversions.  Do I still have to go through the Save, and Transcode steps?

My X5 didn't recognize fw 2.4, even though I had unzipped it, placed it in the root folder, shut it off and restarted with the upper left button. I then got a message saying that fw not found.

Make sure it is in the first slot (TF1:).

Also, is your card formatted in FAT32?

Actually, nevermind.  Don't worry about replying.  I have followed through with all the steps as you said, and it worked great.  Everything shows up now as it should in my X5.  Thanks again for the help!

I live in Japan as well.
I've bought the Japanese version X5 last month, and I really like it.  I like the interface, the  button layout, it is much better then the X3. I can handle it blindly while it is in my pocket. I think the plastic scroll wheel is pretty accurate. I've never tried the original version, I wonder if the rubber wheel is that much different.

Actually I went to the store with the intension of buying an AK100II as my girlfriend won't give me back my X3, but when I tried it, I didn't like it. Maybe the AK100II demo unit had some firmware problems, but I felt the touch screen was unresponsive (compared to my iPhone 5s), it took almost 2 minutes until I got access to my microSD after inserting it,  it couldn't recognise 80% of my flac/ape files and it give an error message with half of the remaining 20%.
The whole experience was so frustrating, that it turned me down.

So I went with the X5 instead. I could access to the files immediately with the file browser, it recognised all my files and played all without any problem.  Comparing the two in a little bit noisy environment (just as I would use it every day when commuting, etc.), I couldn't hear much difference. The AK100II sounded a little bit smoother, badly recorded tracks had a little bit more/harsher background noise on the X5 with my Dunu dn-2000 iem. With my Sennheiser Momentum over-ear, they've sounded the same to me. I also have an E12 and I use the X5/E12 combo with my Momentum, when I don't mind the bulk, as I feel it sounds better then the headphone out. When I want to go more portable I just use my dn-2000 from the headphone out. (The dn-2000 has way too much hiss with the E12, it is too distracting for me.)

Just curious, where and for how much did you buy the X5 in Japan? o.o
Although, I do sort of prefer the smooth circle than the rough one.

To be honest, the EQ on the X5 isn't 'the best' but it gets the job done. All of the EQ settings can now be modified so you aren't stuck with one custom setting. It won't give you any surround field effects or other DSP processing but the audio quality is very good and you shouldn't need them.

The best way to use the EQ is to max all the sliders and then cut the frequencies that you don't want to have as much influence. So, if you want more bass then max every slider and reduce the high frequencies. This will tilt the sound to more bass. The reason is that FiiO reduces the output by 6db to prevent clipping when increasing frequencies in the EQ. This is the proper way to implement EQ so no clipping occurs (unlike Apple). Or simply adjust your EQ and increase the volume to compensate (around 12 units in the volume range gives around 6db increase)

Just make sure everything in your audio chain is good quality or you will hear it. Very low bit rate (below 256kbps) or poorly mastered music will be revealed. When using fairly easy to drive headphones/IEMs the only real benefit to use something like the e12 is the crossfeed or bass boost. I can tell you it's quite good and fairly 'fun', much better than boosting the bass with the EQ.

Had to quote you.

I'm a basshead

The proper way to eq the X5 (using LO) IMO

Cut everything to -6
Should be the X5 sound sig but "quieter" by -6db across the board.

Using a flac of this

from this point a hard to catch background vocal is mixed a layer behind Kendrick for about 10-20 secs.

The clarity of that is a good focus point for clarity of mid.

31 raised to +1 and 62 raised to 0 and other 8 bands at -6 give a clear vocal (really the X5 sound sans the sub-bass) and everything is perfect and the bass with the e12 +16 on and 1/2 a pot and bass switch on and your head is humming and the bass cans are at max before audible distortion.

So if using the e12 cut everything to-6 and only slowly raise the sub bass.

I started with everything 0 and raised 31 and 62 and the highs were just to strong...clean but loud and it was too much. I just wanna raise the bass.

Like I said I use that BG vocal as a rally pole and check it for audio position and it's best I ever heard (almost can catch what he's saying)

So any bassheads with or without an e12 might wanna hush the X5 evenly and raise the bass only. Worked for me.

I must say that the Fiio Team made Great Job with 2.4 firmware !!!! Congrats

I would like to ask something, i'm planing to use fiio x5 as dac for my pc, because of every day use about 2-3 hours wouldn't be a problem for the battery the everyday charging ?? or if the battery is full there is a circuit that stop the battery to charge so there is no prob????

And if there is prob with this every day use what other dac similar to fiio x5 do you recommend for my pc ???

My amp will be Aune X2 Mk2 and Passive Speakers Taga Harmony Platinum One

Thanks a lot, and Happy new Year

Any help Pls ???

Sure, nothing wrong with what you did there. Personally, I would take what you ended up with and raise everything up by the same amount until the bass was maxed and all the other frequencies are raised by the same relative amount. Same EQ curve with less pre-amp reduction. In the end it'll sound the same when volume matched.

Glad you found your bass groove.

It shuts off automatically when finished charging. You will not hurt it by using it a few hours daily and the leaving it plugged in. If I remember correctly, if you see the red charging light flashing you should disconnect it but mine always charges and shuts off.

Generally this is true, but you should discharge the battery from time to time. Constantly keeping the charge all the way up will degrade the lifespan of the battery if not cycled once in a while. This is true for all Li-ion batteries from Apple to Samsung and no name brands etc. Like Apple suggests run a full discharge/charge cycle at least once a month.

Hello fotis,

Keeping the X5 plugged in would be fine as the charging circuit shuts off and the X5 is powered by USB directly, bypassing the battery, after it has been fully charged. :)

Joe, you are correct from an overcharging standpoint, but battery chemistry needs to be used or the ions collect at one end and damage begins to occur to the chemistry unless charged and discharged once in a while.

I was just testing the EQS last night and found that setting all bands to +4 volume matched the EQ OFF setting. Setting them to +6 was louder than EQ OFF setting.

Interesting, need to test this now...........
