I'll start with my gear impressions, pics to come later. I only had enough time to listen to a total of exactly 4 headphones at the meet. There was other gear that I would've liked to have listened to at the meet, in particular the DNA Stratus and Cavalli Liquid Gold, but I never got around to those. Will probably get a chance at another meet eventually. I don't think I've ever listened to nikongod's Silver Ghost either, which is a shame considering how many NYC meets I've been to! I
have to do that at the next NYC meet.
Fostex TH600 (sourced by RAL-DSDHA2)
I own the TH900 right now, and was curious to find out how the TH600 stacked up against it. It was definitely in the same vein, but not exactly the same. I thought it had more bass quantity and less treble quantity, but it was still nearly as effective with multiple genres as music as the TH900 - which included some rock and classical on Moon Audio's computer. None of it was music that I knew, but despite that the TH600 sounded pretty good overall. Would have to spend more time with one again to say anything further. I did like its sleek black finish too, which looked cool in person. The TH600 was promising enough to me that I'd consider buying one to check out further.
Sennheiser Momentum (sourced by Anedio D1)
These headphones had more bass quantity than I thought they would! I've never thought of any Senns as bass monsters but these had a nice kick to them. They did sorta seem like a closed version of an HD6xx to me, though I haven't actually heard an HD6xx in a while, so that's more of a guess than speaking from actual recent experience. They sounded good overall, no major complaints about them. Seemed more balanced-sounding than the V-MODA M-100 and Beyerdynamic DT1350 that I happen to also own right now - sort of a middle-ground between those two. Don't think I'd buy one though, as they still had a slight trace of what I call the Sennheiser veil - overall clarity wasn't that great.
I was also annoyed that the Momentum didn't have a swivel mechanism, which made me unable to get a proper fit with them.
MrSpeakers Mad Dog (sourced by Schiit Bifrost & Lyr)
I heard these at last year's RMAF but completely lost a sense of their sound after hearing so many other headphones right after it at that show. So I wanted to check these out again, especially as I'm always looking for a set of great closed portable headphones. There was actually music on MrSpeakers' computer that I was familiar with (notably jazz, but also other stuff) and it sounded pretty good. I'd say the Mad Dog is probably the most balanced-sounding closed portable headphone in a long time! Most closed portable headphones I've heard have either loads of bass without treble compensation (V-MODA M-100), or loads of treble or mid-range without bass compensation (Beyerdynamic DT1350), but the Mad Dog had roughly equivalent bass AND treble, which I found relatively shocking. It actually blew me away by how much simultaneous bass & treble it had! I instantly suspected the Mad Dog might be worth checking out further - as in, a potential purchase. I'm still contemplating it and might actually do it. Definitely a left-field surprise for me. It was really comfortable too with large circumaural pleather earpads.
It was also promising to me in the aspect that the headphone is essentially a Fostex T50rp - an efficient, low-impedance headphone. I seem to be gravitating more towards headphones of that type lately.
HiFiMan HE-500 (sourced by HiFiMan DAP and EF-6)
I've been curious about the HE-500 for a while, especially since it's been the recipient of much raving on Head-Fi. Well, I wasn't very impressed by these and in fact there was one thing about it that really distracted me. While it was overall decent and wasn't too unlike the HE-400 that I own right now (but with better frequency balance), it made Alison Krauss' voice (which I'm extremely familiar with now, as I have all of her CDs and have listened to them on all sorts of headphones & amps) sound like a ghost, and I'm not referring to her vocal quality where she can sound ethereal. It was something very wrong-sounding and it made her sound the opposite of "physical". It was very unrealistic to me in that sense and I couldn't get past it once I heard it. Will probably check it out again on other gear at other meets eventually, but I was essentially turned off by it and will definitely not be purchasing one anytime soon.
