@kkcc - Are you able to play 24bit ALAC on the 901?

I don't use ALAC myself but it should work fine based on other users report on firmware 1.080. There was an issue with .m4a playing at a funny speed in earlier firmware which I read are now working fine with 1.080. I didn't recall explicit mention of bit rate though.

Between the 901 and ak120, which player's dac section is better? I'm only planing on getting one of these totl daps as a source for a portable amp.

If u plan to use it strictly as a source with a portable amp, between the two ak120 make more sense if simply for the form factor and UI. Maybe even an AK100 or X3 would suffice if pairing with an very nice amp or dac/amp with change to spare.....

Oh I don't mind the size of the hm901, it's just right. I'm one of the few people that saw the dx100 for the first time and said wow! smaller than I thought :p My goal is really to build the best possible portable/transportable rig. So far, reading through the forums, it has come down to 901 as the dap, very likely the 627x as the amp, and the nt6 pro, which has a signature which appears to be something I will really like (all the details, but still fun with an enhanced sub bass)

It seems that the hm-901 has a better DAC, maybe the difference with the ak120 isn't enormous cos several owners of both says that enjoys both of them.

Even in SE?

Yup in SE. It sounded a little bit more open and have more separation when amped with 71B paired with the 1plus2. I will bring along the 901 if I'm meeting this fd again and try to a/b a bit more. Oh btw the difference for ak120 amped with tg334 is minimal if any.

Hey mate, IMO, you don't have to carry a bunch of stack. I was looking for best ciem to suit my taste, I have been there, almost ordered NT6 pro, then after a lot of help from friendly head-fiers I ordered SE5way, it will be with me in a week or two.

The thing is, I now, started to save for a best portable source combo or standalone player. I think, HDP R10 brings two worlds together, while being bulky, as a standalone player nothing comes close and you don't need to stack an amp to get the best possible. Of course, with high end amps you can always improve it but as a standalone it already proved itself. Mind you, it uses the same opamp as portaphile products.

After talking with the owners in HDP R10 thread, I am almost sure that I will order that one when I save enough.

hmmm, true true, I think we are in about the same situation :D The r10 is def on my radar for a totl dap, but have you thought about the hm901 w/ balanced card? Hearing from others on the 901 thread, it is the best dap sq wise so far. The problem is that no one has compared the 901 to the r10 yet, this is tough because all these things are $$$ and I need to pick wisely.

I thought anakchan had compared them and would be able to opine. Granted he has kinna settled on 901+balanced board his view might be biased..... he even got his very expensive cable trrs balanced for the 901!

I was thinking with balanced card you are right, but then battery life is extremely low on balanced card. It turned me off honestly.

If I remember correctly he said HM901 /balanced card is superior than DX100, not R10. He doesn't own huge experience with R10 to make a solid statement I think, I am not sure though, he might come here and help us

Just for curiosity, if I get that HM901 /balanced card, how much it costs to get that special trrs balanced cable?

The trrs balanced termination won't cost you extra when you order a cable. It is just another jack and depends on which you choose. There aren't as many good choices as regular 3.5 trs plug though as common maker such as viablue or oyaide don't yet offer a trrs 3.5 plug. TRRS is the same standard used in all freebie mic'ed smartphone earbuds. Re-terminating is the same deal and you shouldn't get charged more than a reterminating job sans the jack's cost itself.

Thank you mate, I am still into HM901 but battery life with balanced and heat problems are quite bummers for me. Still, it is a hifiman flagship dap and it is quite unique. I might give it a chance later on.

Yea I think these are real and considerable concern if you aren't coming from a stack setup. Heck I picked AK120 over HM901 for aesthetics, pocketability, and battery also, but that one damn fateful demo of 901 (with stock amp) still ended up being fatal........
