Might be contact issue. You can try to scroll the wheel 40-50 (or more) rounds quickly in both direction, don't need to switch on the player, just let the wheel work its way out. Most time it'd fix the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried doing it 50+ times both ways but it seems that the wheel still skips clicks. Do you think it's defective? Pretty sad if it was, barely even spent a day with it :frowning2:

Not sure by "skip clicks" what you really mean. If you are asking if each turn of the wheel correspond to one movement of the cursor/list position, my experience is that is NOT always the case.

To determine whether it is defective, bottom line is whether you can navigate the menu and lists normally. If you find it very difficult to navigate, try RMA and see if the replacement is better.

FYI the early days "scrolling wheel defect" is that it would just fall off, or it doesn't register the movement to move the cursor/list position.

I can't remember if mine skips clicks or not. Will go back to check mine today after work and update here. Worse problem is the wheel turns one way but the UI selection goes the other way (kinda like jumping around), this happens to some units.

@kkcc: I guess what I was expecting is a 1:1 ratio of wheel scrolling to UI movement. In reality, it's like I scroll 5 times expecting the UI to respond/move 5 times down the list but in the end I have to scroll 7-8 times instead. It's as though the wheel movement isn't being registered by the device. If this is deemed normal operation then I'm not worried. My concern was that my unit is defective and might get worse over time.

It doesn't mean that my hm-901 is unusable, but it makes navigation clumsy and imprecise.

Agree with kkcc: the UI can be a bit sluggish in registering the physical movement of the scroll wheel. However, as with Fengwei, I'll check on the 901 to see how it goes. :)

I just tried using the scroll wheel on my 901: seems to be well behaved and the UI responds to each turn of the scroll wheel. :)

This is "normal" on my unit - that is, it behaves just like that: I turn the scroll wheel one click and UI moves accordingly. Then I do it again and it doesn't respond. Next time UI responds as it should ... It is a little annoying, not a huge problem to me. I also sometimes notice that UI goes the opposite direction of the turn on the scroll wheel. In the end, I have just chose to live with this. Maybe I've got a defective unit too ... ?

Just to update that mine behaves normal as Kiats', most time. Only when I turn left and right, sometimes when changing direction, the first click gets skipped, then becomes normal. Not always, but it happens. Since I never noticed this, I guess this won't affect the usage to me.

Yes. For me it "skips" more often when moving in the root menu from left to right or vice versa. It largely is one to one when scrolling up/down in a directory or album list.

Hi guys, thank you for following up with the matter. I've contacted the seller and they're happy to let me test out their demo unit in-store to see how it compares to mine. Will probably drop by on the saturday and update you guys on my findings. In the mean time, i've uploaded a video demonstrating the problem i'm facing with the scroll wheel, hopefully that will give you a better idea. 
 

 
Can I live with it? Yes and no. Yes, because it doesn't affect audio in any way. No, because its my biggest audio purchase yet (i have been using the Fiio E17 for many years prior) and it would suck if I had a 'defective' hm-901. Scroll wheel aside, the improvement in sound quality is so huge that its immediately tangible to my ears. Worth every penny :)

In-ear headphones demand very high signal-to-noise ratio, but don't require high output, because the efficiency is high. Full size headphones typically have very low efficiency and the impedance is relatively very high.

To excel with both types of headphones, the HM-901 has a low-gain output and a high-gain output switch. Low gain is for the smaller type headphones, like earphones, earbuds, in-ears. The high gain is more powerful and is designed for use with full-size headphones.
