J$'s in the house!
Now I'm gonna spend some time getting used to both the J$'s and the Jerg's. The J$ isn't that much more comfortable to me, compared to the pleathers with vent mod, but the headphone seems more secure, and now the headband doesn't rest as much on my head, which is nice.

Here ya go:

I do like the Jerg's more, but the J$ seems to be better than both the velours and the pleathers to my ears. Sorrily im not sure a full comparison will come before the weekend or next week, but I might start small and make the post, changing it as my opinions change too.

Pretty much just putting some tape under the pads to angle the drivers a bit and letting air/vibration pass through under the pads

I did this mod a while back but as a result of my shoddy method of sticking the mounting ring to the pad I went back to the velours. It just felt half baked, not the sound but the build quality. Well I finally got hold of some good duct tape and managed to stick the two pieces much better, it feels more secure now.

I'll give these pads a second chance now and report back with impressions.

Anyone have any ideas what to do if your ears touch the driver? Taking out the foam insert really decreases the thickness of the pad.

Im really liking the sound change I get with these pads but the fact that my ear touches the driver, plus my hate for pleather material is really disappointing. It can get sweaty and greasy over time. Velours are just so much more comfortable. I just wish there was a way to get this sound with velour.

Doing the vent mod is just enough for me. My ears don't touch, they did touch a bit before. Also, the sound will probably be better too

I'll try it tomorrow, but im not too optimistic. It doesn't seem like it would create enough of a gap and by the look of the pictures it may strain the 4 hooks on the mounting ring.

It was just enough for me, though. Also, it does not seem to stress the mounting tabs if you are a bit careful

I've thought up something else. By taping the foam ring to the outside of the pad, it both helps distance my ears from the driver so Im not touching it, and also feels much better than the pleather material on your skin (no sweating and oil). It's quite comfortable too. Jerg, do you think this may have a negative impact on sound in theory?

The only thing is that the foam is not meant to be used for prolonged direct contact with skin, so I can't imagine this going so well if you wear it for more than 4-5 hours, and also it might not last nearly as long as the pleathers would for the long term.

Briefly trying it, it doesn't sound bad compared to just the pads actually. Bass extension is still there, overall transparency seems just a tad lessened although because of the increased distance, there is a tad more air. Very small differences though.

Honestly, the ideal earpads for Hifiman cans would be something like the jergpads (pleathers with lots of damping holes), but a bit larger in diametre, and just a little thicker (maybe another 1/2 cm). This way the ears won't be too far from the drivers (so that midrange won't be so withdrawn and treble wouldn't be so drawn out), but it isn't close enough that people with more fanned ears would have comfort issues.

Comfort-wise judging from the time i've spent with these so far, I think I would be able to last a lot longer than bare pleathers. I think I'll be sticking with these over the velours for the time being, they are a definite improvement over those sound wise.
