I love Grado's and that will most likely be my next headphone. I was looking for something more relaxing for late night listening, and thought the HD650 would be great when I'm tired and just want to enjoy the music

For what its worth, do audition the HE-500 as well. Very relaxing.

HD650s should complement DT880s. I have DT880s and LCD-2s (which have tonal blance similar to HD650s) and like both (DT880s for classical and LCD-2s for other genres).

Are you saying you prefer the DT880 over LCD-2 for classical? Because I'm a classical listener, and I had the LCD-2 Rev1 at one stage and have ended up with the DT880, which I find immensely satisfying. Is it as good as the LCD-2? Probably not as ultimately lifelike, or with as much punch, but I don't feel I'm missing any detail and balance is in fact better. Swings and roundabout really.

^ Yes, I prefer DT880s over LCD-2 V2s for classical. I don't have a problem if anyone's preference is the other way around though. Everyone's ears are different. And songs/composers in classical music are different as well.

I would take LCD-2s if I can keep only one pair: LCD-2s have more bass detail (i.e., impact and texture) than DT880s. Fortunately I can have more than one pairs of headphones. DT880s have more treble details and are a lot more comfortable on my head.

Didn't like the HE-500 when I auditioned them.

Hey, David, do you think the HD650 was a good choice of headphone to complement my DT880? Or would you have recommended a different headphone? Like the K702 Annie or HD600?

I actually think the HD650 is a great "other" headphone to complement the DT880.  They are actually very different in their approach, and both not entirely too far from neutral.

Arent the LCD planar headphones anyways? Not sure if its fair to compare them directly to a driver ran DT880s...

The way i see it, price should be the only criteria when comparing headphones, or anything else for that matter.

Price and what you hear yourself in my book....it all comes down to what you want out of the hobby and what you are willing to put into it.

I agree, and what's nice about this hobby, is that you can get very good sound quality, for relatively little money.

Hi David! After reading your monumental headphone battle I bought a ATH-AD900 and can't say it's very comfortable. :frowning2:
Did you mod your AD900 in any way or don't you have any problems with them? My ears are touching the driver and the headphone gets very uncomfortable after about one hour of listening.

Any sugestions?

You can buy some PVC tubes and slide them behind the pads to add extra depth. They call it the phatpad mod. I have about 10.5" of 3/8" outer diameter and 1/4" inner diameter tubing in each cup of my AD1000PRM.

You can also buy the L3000 leather pads, but those are $100+ and I'm not sure how they would affect the sound.
