Why don't you just sell your HE-500 and LCD-2? You can easily get LCD-3s then... I do only own LCD-2 right now and do not have additional 1000USD (I do not even have 500USD) =/

Some people dont even have themoney to get even the lcd2 or even the he500 :D especially people who are married and have kids, a mortgage a dog, two cars and a wife who doesnt understand why u want to spend that kind of f money on audio equipment as her ipod does the same but she does understand why she needs gucci bags and chanel shoes :D then its hard to find the funds( secretly ofcourse) to spend that kind of money on ur headphones :D

Haha, that's funny! So do you think it's possible to spend 1000 - 2000 USD and still hide it from a wife? Women are very clever, you know... :D

U have to be even more clever then..and hide the invoices..or say u exchanged if for ur own amp/headphone..i bought my headphone saying my old he300 was broken and that the replacement was the wrong one by accident..yep..he500 instead of he300 by accident :D and she believed me..in reality i sold my he300 and the rest i got from my anual bonus..:D..and yeah..i was home to accept the package..or my devious plan wouldnt work..my amp was even better story..i sold my mstage in a meeting..and bought the 337..when i received it i said i had a 1 on 1 exchange for my vintage luxman cd player (which i sold seperately to another person..lolz) of which i knew she hated it! andi did same thing with power cables..and even with my new car last december ( i told her it was 15.000 euro cheaper then in reality :D) yep..u almost need a business plan to outwit the wifey..but until now..i still have all my balls in one piece.. :D no highpitched voices here..but i found out my little one, gabriella of 10) is seeing through my scamming lately..but i bought her off with a new 10' tablet..so she is my partner in crime..i think she does same with mums..as mums always says: but honey..those shoes are old..i bought them last year..NOT last week..yeah right! and now mums gave her a brandnew iphone 4.. That girl will be a perfect salesperson one day..or a crook or even worse a politician :D

Don't think my midprice equipment would do them justice... I tend to buy a lot of cheap secondhand amps and dacs and my two phones seem to play well with most of the equipment I buy. They give me more versatility as I enjoy change in this hobby probably more than having an end goal. Plus its taken me a long time to get to this point and owning two of the best phones on the market. I'm gonna enjoy them for a long time before I even think about upgrading. Plus I don't have much money, a wife, kids, cat, mortgage hahaha

Well, I see this unique quality rather in phones like HD650 or LCD-2 but I understand what you mean... Still, are HE-500 really THAT better than HD650? For example, I cannot see the difference between D7000 (number 32 here) and LCD-2 (number 12 here) to be DRASTIC. Those two phones just have different sound signature and I prefer the one of LCD-2... I cannot hear anything that should rank LCD-2 as "completely superior" to Denons. If you understand what I mean... That's why I am curious about HD650 (n. 20) vs HE-500 (n. 16).

Actually, for that particular comparison, I  preferred the D7000 to the LCD2 and could not say one was better, but they were certainly different. The HE500 just seems to stand out with some midrange special combo of detail and smoothness and
a grand bass (which is pretty well defined, just not on an SR009 level) and very listenable highs that I just don't hear on any phone under $1000, so I would say they are the phone to beat under that price. The HD650 is OK, but it has some flaws that show up from time to time, like a covered up vocal, or sometimes a shriek on a high pitched vocal, or a one-note feeling to the bass, and therefore, as a longtime (8-year) HD650 owner, I have to say that, yeah, the HE-500 is indeed that much better.

If you're talking about cans under $1,000, I'd definitely call it one of the front-runners for best overall.  If any price range is included, then I personally prefer HE-6, SR-009, HD800, and the LCD-3 (not the 2).  I also personally prefer the treble on all of these.  That being said, the HE-6 and HD800 are definitely more finicky with amplification, and the LCD-3 and SR-009 are pretty damn expensive.  If you add value into the mix, then it deserves it's place at the top of David's value rankings.

The problem with the HE6 is that you need an amp other than your regular headphone amp, meaning more interconnects and another power cord and more space for it. And you hope there is a spare output from your source.
If you want to make the HE6 your only dynamic phone, I guess it's not a problem, but if you like a variety of dynamic phones, or may want to experiment in the future with other phones, this may box you in.
It's already a pain that Staxes need their own infrastructure, but this has been true forever. I personally can't deal with this from dynamics. And with a top-notch headphone amp and the superb HE500s in my collection, I don't feel I need to go to all this trouble. The HE500s scale up with better amps and I feel that's the way to go.

I think u will have the same challenge with all top tier phones over 1400 usd..u need a decent amp ( and cables/source) to drive them at the levels they can perform at their best. Its not just buying the amps itself..imho ofcourse

You need a SPEAKER amp for the HE6, not something the other flagship phones require. Thank you for getting me to clarify this, I appreciate it. I should have said this in my last comment.
:)

I heared the he6 on a violectric v200 and it sounded very good..but i agree..he6 needs a good speaker amp.
