It is as far as you want to go power-wise.
The Mini-X is on the edge already (you might not be able to go past 9oclock on the volume pot.

The UPA-200 would be a waste, as they wouldnt be usable with the HE-500.

Now for the HE-6 (recently bought these babies and lovin them, even underamped, but the Mini is coming soon) that is a question I cant answer, but they most likely would :D

Cheers! Enjoy your new buy :) Luke

Good answer...

Haha well yea, but a tube amp with enough power to drive orthos is either too old and troublesome to hunt down or too expensive.

Then i have a surprise for u.SURPRISE! :D .an amp..not troublesome, not old but brandnew..and strong enough to drive the he500..and trust me..if u try him..u wont go back to any SS amp or any amp for that matter in that price range for that phone! Its under 700 usd..

hint..check my pics..:D he also has a brother lafigaro 339.. Put some tung sol 5998 or bendix 6080wb tubes in it and ur hooked! But u dont have to believ me on my word or on the word of 15 people who listened to my rig (also with their hd650's, lcd 2ver.2 and even grados!) on the headfi meet i attended 2 months ago..the only phone who hated my amp was the hd800.. Rightwqrd awful!!! But best pair was with my own he500..give it a try..its built like a tank, is also heavy as one being 18kg without tubes..so its solid built..check the insides..looks like audi could have built it..so simple and symetrical! It oozes quality..i have a pic of the inside on my profile also..check it if ur interested...seriously..i heard lots of bursons and musical fidality, a violectric and very shortly even a woo audio 6..but for me..until now..no other amp in this pricerange gives me this big smile i have when i listen to my rig..as i said..try it urself with the right tubes..maybe ur a believer one day :D

Don't want to derail the thread here, but do you guys think the HD800 would work well with a speaker amp like the Emotiva?

The sound is nice, not as good as with the planars, but good. Obviously enough power. Still sounds better on the M^3 though. They do better on something with more finesse *cough**HA-160D**cough*. Not as practical either (hiss is worst than the LCD-2s). Better off with a dedicated headamp for those. Been borrowing the Senns for a few weeks now, should probably give them back.

Another thing I noticed is that the HE-5LE has this damping material in between the grills and the back of the drivers. I'm not talking about that thin cloth attached to the grill, but damping foam. I removed the foam, and now these things sound freaking awesome. Before I was like....hmmm this is nice but the highs sound a tad muffled. Remove the damping foam and it's like a new headphone. I was thinking in my head that maybe I should upgrade to the HE-6....nope not now. This is amazing.

+1 For the HD800 and the M^3.  -1 for the *cough**HA-160D**cough*   I'm just saying..

The a-100 is to much for the HD800s

FWIW, I picked up some Polk RTA8's this weekend. The emotiva is a great little amp, no doubt. It's really helping these speakers shine :)

Also, I have an emotiva coupon code that drops the mini-x down to around 150.. PM me if you want it.

Are they Chinese amps? The Chinese are way too fond of ultra bright blue. I've had to put black tape over several portable amps with tiny little power lights that nevertheless lit up the whole room like the Second Coming. Very annoying.

Engineered in the US, manufactured in China.

You know... electrical tape would have made a lot more sense

Heya,

So I've spent some time with my new DAC. The Maverick Audio TubeMagic D2, which is a tube dac with both solid state and tube pre-amp output which I'm using to send the signal to my Emotiva.

My impression up to this point is that I don't need or want my other DACs at this point, I didn't expect much from the TubeMagic D2, but I often surprise myself when I let the price of something fool me into thinking it can't be as good as some other options. But here we have something that truly makes me smile. The TubeMagic D2 has a warm, syrupy flavor that I'm really liking. There's no over-analytical or dry sound coming across when paired up with my Emotiva and HE-500. Other DAC's I've used are the HRT Music Streamer II, Fiio E10, Schiit Biforst, NFB12, etc. And so far, I really like the overall synergy of the TubeMagic D2. I get the tube-goodness that I miss, without having to get a tube amp that can output the levels needed for an ortho. One of the best recommendations that I've received here on Head-Fi honestly, and glad I finally got a tube-dac. The connectivity is wonderful, every digital input I could need. The unit is sleek and very simple, not flashy, but not overly dull either. It's not a big unit either, but it's bigger than a lot of headphone amps that I've had. It's actually about the size of the Schiit Asgard/Bifrost/Lyr to give you an idea of size & shape. The power button is very firm, has a great click to it. The knob to select inputs is tight, and has notches which click when you move through the inputs, nice and smooth, feels good. Same blue LED hue, matches the Emotiva, which is a neat little bonus (as I like the LED glow of both). I like that you can see the tube inside the DAC from the top through the grill (and you can of course take the top off and fool with it, etc, but I'm not doing that right now). Sound wise, everything is clear, crisp, but with a bit of warmth going on. It's not a big difference, it's quite subtle. But I find it takes a little edge off the treble and has a little more casual/warm/mellow feel to it than some of the solid state DACs I've been rotating. None of them really sound all that different to me honestly, but of them all, so far, I'm enjoying the synergy of the D2 with the Emotiva on all my headphones (I've had more cables made to have balanced terminations on more headphones so I can give more impressions soon on how some other headphones sound with this setup). Sound stage and imaging is about the same, which is already very good. Still has same great separation and dark space. I don't notice any obvious blur or too much bloom or anything like that. And no dreaded funny tube noises as it warms so far (who knows in a few years). Warmth is something that I notice a little more, and less edge in the treble (but we're talking very subtle here, it's not very edgy already). I like the tube pre-amp out sound better than solid state pre-amp out so far. It's subtle, again, but it just has a warm character to it that sounds mellow and powerful and is very nice with the HE-500 so far.

Emotiva mini-x A100 $189~250
Maverick TubeMagic D2 $250

So far, I like this source setup a lot more than previous combinations I've been trying and it's really interesting that it's only a $450~500 setup instead of a $900~1200 setup that I was previously toying with with various Schiit gear and other things. And it's a setup that can handle anything from an efficient headphone to something of the likes of the HE-6 and speakers. Very universal. Great synergy so far.

Very best,

A very interesting find. I used to own one of those maverick's and I always thought it had a stellar DAC built into it, which was unfortunately shadowed by the marginal headamp built into it. I really liked that tube out on the tube as well. Good find indeed!

Heya,

Yea, the A1 and the D1 were a little underwhelming, but good for their overall cost. The D2 is the new unit, all digital, better DAC, and tube pre-amp output. Great unit so far. And really doesn't remind me of the price point.

Very best,
