What are the worst comparisons you've ever heard?

So kinda off topic too. So I have a hearing loss and wear hearing aids. I had always used regular earbuds and love music so figured I was getting what I could out of headphones. I randomly came across this website and decided to try out a pair a few years ago. My first pair was M6, nothing fancy. I just kinda sat there listening to the Beatles for about an hour just like dumbfounded the different in sound. I mean without my hearing aids on I can't even hear crickets, bugs, many birds and hell to the no can I even discern were many sounds are coming from. Using IEMs (have had several more since the m6) I'm able to listen to a range of sounds I can't hear in person very well in music. It's amazing to listen to a song and actually be able to tell that a drum is behind the singer or that guitar is to the left of the singer etc. Also hearing a full range of music fairly clearly (xba1 or M50s) just amazes me and lets me hear all different kinds of sounds in music I have never heard before.

Sorry long story but figured I'd share to show how this site has helped changed me :). Actually most people that listen to my M50s always say they sound better then anything they use to listen to music. Interesting enough, my IEMs don't get the same reaction. Everyone thinks they sound the same as their earbuds or the M50s that I have had them try out.

A co-worker of mine said my Audeze LCD-2 sounds and looks like old crappy headphones from the 1980s compared to his Beats.

We live in a society that's very design conscious.  Those who know little about a subject will make their choices based upon popularity, marketing and appearance.  Usually the things that are most popular (in almost every category of life) are poor quality.  There are exceptions but they don't extend to headphones.

Beats are popular because of marketing, not because of quality or capability.  If someone loves music and hears better they don't usually want to go back.  Of course it will usually take longer than a few minutes for perceptions to shift and for the people listening to understand what it is they're hearing (or how much more).

There are also always people who buy things for perceived status.  They want their friends to think they have the best; it's not important that it's not true, merely that the popular perception is 'that's awesome'.

why do you guys hate on the studio? I compared them to a vmoda m80 and an ath m50 and i liked the studio better.

I know this is gonna sound absolutely cray cray... but believe it or not, just because you like them better doesn't mean they actually are better.  Many of us here don't think they are very good in and of themselves - much less better than anything else.  And because we honestly believe that, we're going to say so.  Seems reasonable right?

Plus, you're not crazy about certain models of Beats yourself.  If you were, your sig wouldn't consist of a pre-emptive disclaimer:  "Before you say anything my friend sold me the beats tour for $20 brand new in the box. :)"

Just sayin'

I know this gonna sound absolutely cray cray... but believe it or not, at the end of the day it doesn't matter how much objectively better it is if the listener doesn't think it's it better than what's the point? Also the beats tour are at a borderline decent value at retail (turbine still better) but at $20 it is probably the best iem besides the mh1c (don't like jcords) and maybe the she3580. The solo hd is horrible and I haven't tried the mixr/executive/pro/wireless but some people here think beats is picking it up with the mixr and executive.

I wonder if it's cause the Beats magically uncompress your MP3s. Or is it the socks they put in front of the drivers :p, I think it makes them has moar base, right? Maybe it's the horrible clamp, and that people use them in studios all the time, right? xD. But good job not liking the Tours. :D

I use 320 kbps mp3

and I like the tours just not enough to justify retail at 90 they would be good. The studios don't clamp me at all? ... it's actually very comfortable

LOL, I'm not saying that different sounding cans are objectively better.  But your original question wasn't about whether other cans were better/worse.

You wanted to know why we dislike Beats, while you think they sound better than some of the stuff we recommend.  I'm simply pointing out that we can like or dislike whatever we want based on our own observations and impressions.  And just because you have a different opinion, doesn't mean that ours are not valid.

if beats had a 50++% discount, they would be gladly accepted here on this forum. but the catch is the huge pricing is also responsible for its premium image it has on the general unsuspecting population

on a side note, this is a seemingly unrelated video about polloution but can be loosely related to our situation here too

kind of like we are the rebels trying to show the general population in the city the truth while the big shots are like monster and dr.dre who dictate to their blind sheep. just my loose interpretation
