The NEW JVC HA-S400. Affordable Carbon Nanotube cans for the masses.

Just recieved my whites jvc400, right out of the box these are lacking some sparcle/highs compared to my coworkes s400 with over a week of use/burn in.
Same thing that i didnt like from my s500 with less than 50hours of burn in, they where lacking some highs and i had to use the treble boost from my ipad.
In any case, $30 bucks is just a bargain and they sound very good.

this confirms I am not gping crazy as first I herd much more controlled bass and next two days later I herd brighter highs actually surprising I dont need my EQ settings anymore!
Also my papertowel mod wore out as they flattened with use,
so I now using those long brown paper towels, folded up long ways , then cut extra length .

Now they are more lifted very nice sounding :)

But but the housing of the S500s are more sexy and premium looking/ feeling. LoL

I need that premium goods in order to steal all the chicks from hershey22 since he is already rocking those white S400s.

edit: Yeah my noob @ss is not even gonna try to transplant, forget all the soldering non sense. Pad modding/ changing is where it ends for me haha

Oh yeah SPEAKING of TRANSPLANTS that one dood was suppose to trade me his S400s for my superluxes. And that other dood was suppose to find a cheap body for this operation. Guess this is never gonna happen, cuz I already knew once he breaks and box open and has the S400s on his head, its gonna be a gonner. He ain't ever coming back from S400 CNT heaven as I have predicted. LoL

Enjoy your S400s you'll!!!

I heard you talking about me all the way from Southern California, sfwalcer.  Funny story about them headphones.  I was loving my S400s, then my roommates S500's fell victim to the resident Pitbull-German Shepard and he ended up buying them off me cause HE liked them so much.  Between my roommates and I there are now 4 sets of these CNT headphones floating around the house now.

With that said I do have a pair of S500 drivers to play with now.....

LMAO, thought for sure these S400s would get you, but it got your friend instead haha.  Man with so many pairs of CNT headphones floating around your home it is truly a CNT heaven.

Hey why didn't you just transplant that chewed up set of S500s into the housing of that pair of S400s you had? Guess it is too late now since you probably can't even pry that pair of S400s from your friends hands by now.

Well looks like you got a mission to complete now, you're gonna be the 1st one to transplant/ discover a great sounding set of open back S500s.  No pressure there!

Have fun playing around with them sexy S500 drivers.

Currently, it's looking like I'm just going to do a rewire on these drivers/cups, and then attach the cups (teeth marks and all) onto his S400 headband.

I have turned my s400 from a tame mid-centric smoothness,
into a wild beast.
I used the tips from the s500 thread to tape the vent hole,
and also went further to tape the whole surface area!
which had angled taped surfaces.

Then I applied the leaner and stiffer "brown paper towel" mod.
This helped bring more focus on the sound, absorbing less and also taking up less airspace while holding its shape better.
The sound to me is more imerssive and dynamic.
As close U will get to a s500, I guess.
More sub-bass and more lively sound.
:)

Forgot to mention I am using stock pads, for maximum bass
but I removed the inner center felt totally from masking my sound.
here is a final pic.

ahahahahahahahahah looks like someone went tape happy. LoLs Good job Maxx. It is still mid-centric but it is now more DYNAMIC and energetic, more engaging seems to be the right word to describe this subtle change.

Copied/ Pasted from the S500s thread on the tape mod.
Quote:
On the side note, i did tape up the S400s and the bass increase was subtle but yet noticeable. Here are some pics of my taped up S400s....
......I taped covered all of the rectangular arched dents around the driver, as well as that one open arch slot on these S400s. As seen here. (S400 driver on the left of the 1st pic)
------------>......masking tape seems to work much better than scotch tape, cuz it is similar to the original tape used by JVC.

My theory here is that the arched rectangular dents/ the open arch slots acts as a sound sink which traps and/ or channels the sound. By taping it up, the sound bounces right on to the disk and to your ears without it being channeled anywhere else. Hence you get more bass and a more dynamic sound.

This was what I experienced with my taped S400s. Before tape was applied, the sound was mid-centric smooth, mellow and relaxing. But after I taped it up, the bass subtly increased, the sound became more dynamic; bit faster and more engaging to listen to. It is very nuanced but I can tell that my S400s sounded less mellow due to a slightly increased bass and speed.

So there you have it musubi1000, this is my theory on what you have stumbled upon. I have yet to try your mod in full haha, enjoying my mod of these S500s too much currently. LoL

You are a brave soul.

Brave soul indeed !    ...fresh earwax flying thru those opened mesh and pelting themselves on them CNT drivers if you have the slightest inclination to headbang.

Apologies if I gross anyone out !

Since these are about half the price of the S500's I will probably get these soon... Are the stock pads with the paper towel/tape mods the best choice to get as much bass as possible or should I buy some pads for them aswell?

Nov 3, 2012 at 5:02 PM Post #568 of 1,522
Stock pads with brown paper towel + tape mod. You get more bass, no a ton imo, but its evedient the bass boost you get with these mods.
