Sorry to hear about your TH-900.  Please report back when you get to make comparison b/w the DX100 and the F807 using an IEM.  The results b/w the the two DAP playing normal lossless file should be even closer.

i have been using IEMs actually. The FitEar TO GO! 334 are IEMs. I've just not tried headphones yet. Mind you though, it's not my intention to keep trying headphones until they sound the same 'cos I'm sure eventually the earbuds would make the DX100 and the F807 sound on par with each other .

OK guys, I am proud to announce that I joined the crew.
I wanna thank Alex, who patientely answered to all my PMs, and who sold me the device thanks to Ok-Guys' (thanks mate
beerchug.gif
) post here.
So many other people to thank ;Turok, Way, AnakChan, Cn11, Purk and all the persons who posted here

Now my first impressions on this unit:  after a few songs, I began to smile; the smile of satisfaction, of relief, a smile full of gratitude.
Would it be possible that sony released the general-purpose unit I looked for?
I was affraid I expected too much of the F807 but I am positively surprised.

I really like my other units but they all have defects which eventually frustrate me sometimes a lot: the W25 is enormous with Hip-Hop and electro (VERY DEEP bass) but I cannot appreciate Soul with it on the go.
With the Iriver U100, I can appreciate Soul on the go, but I need my in-ear headphones to really appreciate Hip hop and electronic music.
Plus it doesn't sound good with my Studiospares M1000.
So I often had to switch and match to appreciate my music.

I did not have much time to listen to the F (and to load Flac files), but I already like the sound with mp3 files.
I often had to stand up and dance (or sing) 'cause I could not resist.Surprising...
I don't feel like the sound is flat.
It is detailed, delivers beautiful trebels , with bass (good impact and in sufficiency) and dynamic when it is needed, just like my Studiospares.
I was afraid because I was not used to have that kind of sound in one of my devices, but the combo F807 + M1000 works more than fine.
I really need to listen with Flac files now.
Nevertheless, it sounds like the bass fall less deep than on my W25, also seems like it is less powerfull than my little Window.
But I need to listen more seriously to be sure, may be I am still too much used to its warm sound...

Congratulations, I agree that the only downside of the F is its bass, but it makes up for it with clean open sound. The bass is there beautifully engineered to exist without overshadowing.

And my Z was able to drive some cans better than the F, as to more power.
If you have either Z or F , you are a winner.

How about just a lossless comparison b/w F807 & DX100 using IEM?  I'm curious to hear what would be your impression b/w the two units.

I love my US & Japanese/Asian A walkmans but found the Euro version to sound inferior to other released.  Yes, the physical button is way nice and I love the hold button as well.

I do believe you are talking about spl ? meaning on non volume level capped sony´s to avoid ear damage ?
otherwise technically speaking they´re just the same and when externally amped makes no difference anyway

Is anyone else getting CRAZY distortion with Clear Bass on anything higher than +1?

Also, this player definitely seems colder in sound than my old Walkman, its bass isn't as strong, it seems. But the midrange and above seems better...

Edit: the fact that I have Poweramp on the F806 however gives it way more customizability in terms of sound compared to the S739F, since Sony's players' have only five bands and three levels each way. That said I'm still trying to decide if the F806 is actually an audio step upwards. The touch interface is both an improvement and a problem as it's much more capable, but it's also a lot slower and nigh on impossible to use in a pocket. It's also twice as large (and heavy) as the S739F, but according to the salesperson, it's constructed of magnesium alloy. I can believe that! It feels fabulous and solid to the hand - the only part of it that feels anything but invincible is that plastic insert that holds the speaker grille and lanyard eyelets.

The F806 is clearly a bit on the sluggish side of Android devices, however, as Apex Launcher lags incredibly, while the default launcher doesn't have an apparent frame rate problem, it does have an obvious delay between swiping and opening the application drawer. And I've seen it redraw widgets more than once, suggesting it's got an apparent RAM deficiency. On the other hand the GPU is definitely up to snuff, Riptide and Visualizer have no frame rate problems. Still working on figuring out the rooting process, can anyone who's rooted theirs help out on that?

I have noticed clipping with CB activated as well, especially on music material with demanding bass passages. The exact same files don't distort or clip on my Sony X either. Also, when using certain Android music player apps, the clipping doesn't happen even if I've got a 30-60hz bass boost going with EQ. Very strange indeed. Thankfully the best sounding player I've encountered is one of the ones which seems to avoid any clipping, Cubed. I can't understand why some players seem to remedy that, and the stock Sony player has issues. One of the oddities of this DAP I guess. I suppose I should update my gripes list with that.....

No I meant what I said.  The euro unit of the A has less volume and sound is brighter and harsher than the US & Asian A walkman.  I had three versions compared side by side and the US & Asian sounded identical with the Euro sounded not as good.

I don't get it when I buff 30Hz with Poweramp too. It's probably a quirk of the Clear Bass implementation on the stock player. Odd.

Yeah, it is very quirky. I wonder if the Z player has the same issue.... I've contemplated picking up a Japanese Z1070 for a while now, for several reasons: the periodic distortion with the F's stock player, bigger capacity, and the recent descriptions of sound quality differences.

Just got my Disney-fied F807 from Japan. I haven't compared it to my Z1070 yet, but the size/form factor is MUCH better and the right size IMO I am not going to take the F and Z both on my upcoming trip, but assuming no major hiccups, I'll be selling my Z1070 when I get back. The classic Walkman simulations/visualizations are also very cool.

Which print did you choose?

So far not much luck selling 807S, and may just end up keeping it.

Well done Pondu & AnakChan (it's worth keeping) on joining the Walkman-Gang... enjoy.

never had any distortion problems with any of my WM-Z's whatsoever... hope that clears that up.

people have had problems with the WM-Z stock-player when using it with Power-Amp installed... the solution was to uninstall Power-Amp and get rid... it's detailed in the WM-Z thread go back 3-4months and you should find it... I don't have any external apps on my Z1070 so can't really comment.

also about a month or so after the WM-Z went on general release Sony ran-out a firmware/system update which completely rectified any minor quirks the WM-Z had... I don't see any reason not to expect the same from Sony which should rectify any distortion problemo's.

I might need to step upwards to a F807... I only have 4GB left on this F806, which may likely not last long, given that I haven't even installed all the apps.

So has anyone got a pointer for me to root this thing? I'd like to at least change the font and possibly give it a little bit of a performance boost. Also I'm feeling a tad concerned over the battery life, it's been active five hours and it's half-empty...

Thx OK-Guy, yes maybe I shouldn't get rid of it in such haste. Sorta find it hard for it to fit in my DAP collection. I may need to get creative on how I could use it.

I got the Steamboat Willie one.

Here's another pic of mine with my camera...also grey in colour. Almost matches :-
