iPad iPhone bit-perfect DLNA/UPnP wi-fi streaming 24bit or DSD files / high storage capacity / portability
Jan 25, 2014 at 7:51 AM Post #151 of 249
My thread is a bit obsolete now, since latest iOS 7 even iPhone can now play 24 bit-perfect like iPads using a CCK attached to a USC DAC device like the iFi iDSD.
I'll update the OT not very soon since it must be rearranged for iOS7, iPhones and iDSD or similar devices.

Streaming 24bit/96 and 192 got my interest just a few weeks ago. This thread was started almost 2 years ago I think. I feel the same as you, but I hope this thread won't die soon.

Would you in short list your finding of working configurations for streaming upto 24/192 flac files? I currently use iPeng with LMS running on my unraid server. It works upto 24/96. No 24/192. LMS might downsample to 24/96. How were your findings with 8Player? I tried the free versions but it seems not to go higher than 44 or 48kHz.But maybe my DLNA server is doing the transcoding I use Serviio DLNA server.

Hello,

This is an easy step-by-step guide for any compatible DAC (iFi or not).

Beyond PCM, this setup with the Onkyo app for example also does Bit-Perfect DSD and DXD.

This works for iPad/iPhone/iTouch (see details for certain models etc).

Hope this helps.

Got my iDSD today. Hooked ut up to my iPad Mini trough the Lightning USB Camera Adapter and it seems to work with iPeng/LMS upto 24/96.

24/192 is downsampled to 24/96. I only see a yellow light on the iDSD not cyan. Where? I don't know. Either LMS or iPeng or iOS.

Any hints anybody? Should I try DLNA with 8player. Or is there a way to avoid downsampling in LMS if it at all happens?

To test highest samples rates try a few DLNA/UPnP servers using 8Player bit-perfect app for iOS, .
Be careful not any DLNA server is bit-trasparent, many downsaple to a MAX supported bit/freq.
More: FLAC files are not ideal to stream to iOS, freq isn't recognized properly even using 8Player, it's OK only when files are stored in internal memory and replayed with specific app like FLAC Player.

For portability everywhere, the DLNA server on the Seagate GoFlex Satellite for example doesn't downsample or transcode so you should stream ALAC files to iOS, to avoid taxing wi-fi using bigger WAVs.

At home connected via cabled Ethernet to a high-end stereo streamer the DLNA server should be able to transcode lossless ALAC to WAV which gives a few must have advantages:
1) Bigger libraries are possible using only ALAC (compatible with any DLNA server, iOS and iTunes too).
2) Purist approach: files are transcoded on server and sended as pure PCM to the renderer which doesn't have to do that work before feeding the internal DAC.
3) Metadata could be edited as you wish (WAV or AIFF have limited metadata support and universal compatibility).

With Windows I suggest Asset UPnP server, it could also transcode ALAC to PCM WAV.
To edit metadata and manage any file conversion use dbpoweramp from same company.
Even for CD ripping I use their software!

I just got a 1 TB Seagate WiFi Plus. So if I want to stream files from it to my Ipad they shouldn't be flac but ALAC or WAV? I already found that Seagates Media Streamer won't stream flac and 8player downsamples them. I wish the Seagate WiFi Plus could convert flac to wav on the fly.

I keep my flacs on an unraid server and Qnap NAS. I just installed minimserver on my Qnap NAS and instructed it to transcode my 24bit flac files to wav24 on the fly. 8player plays these transcoded files with the right sample rate. I see a green, yellow or cyan light on the iDSD. Unfortanely minimserver has some compatibility problem with certain flac files but I am working with the developer to iron this out. minimserver is very lightweight and can be run on minimalistic hardware.

I have no servers running in Windows, can Asset run on a NAS?

Asset UPnP is Windows only, but MinimServer is OK only to transcode FLAC to WAV, I've had problems its FLAC to WAV24 (which upsample to 24 bit 16 bit files) feature.
And generally if you stream to iOS ALAC is as a proprietary implementation as is WAV, no need to tax a wi-fi stream with a bigger WAV or even worst WAV24 and finally you always need more space to store WAVs without a single advantage. Convert to ALAC it's easy and relative fast.

Regarding iDSD I've found that the filter position to low is better detailed and dynamic, switch it up and the sound gets more soft and less airy, maybe for some cheap headphones it's a good thing, but in my B&W P5 the lowest setting is clearly better.

For those of us who are interested in a mobile solution for native 24/192 streaming to an external USB DAC, this particular one below should be fairly simple

For DSD lovers, there's the potential to stream DoP encoded/encapsulated FLAC over 802.11n if Seagate Media App were good enough for playing something like this

With the iDSD nano you don't need a powered hub and still can play all formats.

I havn't tried it, anybody know would JRiver Media Centre - JRemote - ipad - DAC/amp allow high resolution playback?

Yes - that will work with suitable DAC.

For DSD, you need to configure JRMC to play DoP.

You can get sample files from www.2l.no

May be here is THE alternative source for external DAC like the HUGO:  Panasonic FZ-M1

A rugged 7" Tablet with USB 3, Windows 8.1 pro 64 bits & 256 Gb on board + MicroSD : 384 Gb

--> by by ONKO player,  Welcome  JRiver or Foobar :)

what do you think ?

Or may be....  SURFACE PRO 2  + JRiver  (same size than iPAD but... 512 Gb internal memory ! )  ?

see here a thread about using a Surface PRO as music server

what do you think ?

Been thinking about a Windows 8.1 alternative, but these are just TOO EXPENSIVE. Both come close to 2000 Euros here in Holland. That gets me a lot of music.

For now I am quite happy with my iPad mini plus iDSD nano. Streaming music of my server or wireless 1TB Seagate disk.

I was doing a little playing around with the Herus today and decided to download the Onkyo HF Player and paid for the DSD pack. This will play DSD native to the Herus and it's changed my opinion about the Herus by quite a bit :-

With the same connectivity & earphones, I flipped back 'n forth between the standard iPad Music Player (non-DSD tracks) vs the Onkyo HF Player with the DSD versions of the same track and it's quite noticeable improvement.

What player are you using With DSD files ?

Does the player see the files in the IPad and those in the wireless HD as part of just ONE music librairie ?

Can a playlists use files strored on both locations ?
