Thanks to W. I received these news about the PS-1:

"Mr. Hoffmann from Grado Distributors in Nuerenberg informed me that the PS-1, which was mainly designed for sound engineers, is being sold without any sort of manual/documentation regarding its technical specifications.

He said that Grado only produced a limited quantity of these headphones for interested sound engineers in Germany. After all phones are sold, Grado has no plans of ever producing them again. Consider yourself lucky that you possess a set of these phones, as they will eventually become a rarity with an extremely high resale price should you ever decide to get rid of them.

He also told me that the specs of the PS-1 are identical with those of the RS-1. Anyone interested in finding out the specs of the PS-1 should check out the specs of the RS-1 on the Grado Labs Homepage.

The only major difference between the PS-1 and the RS-1 is that the parts inside the RS-1 are mainly glued while those inside the PS-1 are all screwed together. According to Hoffmann, this has a considerable impact on the sound of the PS-1.

By the way, Mr. Hoffmann said that he checked out HeadFi and noticed that there was a big hype in the United States about the PS-1. People in the US should, however, not get their hopes up, as these phones will not be marketed in the US, and, once the limited number has been sold, there will no longer be such a thing as PS-1".

Best!

Thats a shame.

I have a feeling that grado will eventually release an even better successor to the RS-1 eventually. They always seem to have a few tricks up their sleeves.

Frankly i don't care, since after the 1k mark its just plain silly not to be using electrostatic.

i would be interested but honestly at $1400 its pretty hard to buy when you havent heard it.

how does this compare with the 325's? and can one use it with the ra-1 amp and still have the grado sound.???

I seen the pics you put up and they look very sexy and sleek.

I would spend it easily but I'm sure the line at todds is pretty damm long

Hmmm, the $1400 of PS-1 comparing to $225 of MS-2 is a big jump. Is it also a BIG jump in a sound improvement?

I look forward to read a detailed (sticky) reviews soon.

I read Nik's review, however it would be nice to hear more opinions. I need to be heavily persuaded to make my wallet empty.

One more comment here:

IMHO it depends which parts are screwed and which are glued. Wooden parts are usually glued together unless you need heavy load, screws are then used for safety reasons. For metals you can use a glue, screws or welding. I agree that there is an impac on the sound properties, however I wonder whether it's good or not. A rich glue layer between two metal parts serves as a damping layer, while screws (especially with not propriate shape and dimensions) could cause resonance.

The HP-1000 is screwed together in a very similar construction to the PS-1 (at least judging from photos). My bet is that the HP-1000 has the less enclosure resonance than any other headphone. That was one of Joe's design goals for the HP-1000 and it pays off in a neutral sound. On the other hand, the RS-1 has obvious enclosure resonances, which is the most likely cause of its thick and syrupy midbass.

This is wonderful information. Though I still want to hear the PS-1's and won't make a true judgement without hearing...this really decreases my drive to go for them. At the asking price, for a metal enclosure + RS-1 drivers? I think I will go Omega II's. I like the RS-1's BECAUSE of the woody colourations not despite them. And with the HP-1000's floating around...hard to swallow $1400 for these beauties without a solid consensus. Maybe after more reviews. If the reviews are hot, it will rewet my appetite.

I was interested initially but now I don't think I'll be looking for any,I'll stick with my $650 HP2's
