Velour pads,...they muffle the sound. The opening is half the size of the stock pads,...

That's the same as I found, that they muffled the sound. Too bad, because they are very comfy.

I did a search through this thread using the keywords Open back mod and nothing came up

Should be a cinch to carefully hit the backs with a nice fine holesaw , and install some decent circle-holed mesh.
Got to hear these the other day.  Pretty impressive, but if they can keep their overall qualities with an open rear I bet even moreso.
With all the recabling etc going on it surprises me nobody took this next step. Unless my search wording was completely lame.
is there some inner construction that would prevent this I am not aware of?

I'll keep looking for inner shots to see.

Another mind blower at the price to be sure.
477 pages here we come!!!!!

edit:  that's it???

I honestly found the sound to be pretty muffled as it is. No matter what I tried, the sound just didn't come off as clear to me, no matter what amount of treble boosting I tried.

Maybe you're not getting a correct seal? I've tried pressing them on my ears before and they sounded really muffled, after releasing it went back to being clear.

+1 Thats why I'm selling them. I guess this sound signature is not for me.

Perhaps Grados would work better for you.

Never had a chance to hear one, but I love GR07, is it close to Grados sound?

Grados are supposed to be great for rock and accoustic music, and don't have enough bass for most people.

Really depends on what you're listening to, though. I always thought the Alessandros would be much more bass anemic than they actually turned out being since everyone always goes on about that (often people who haven't even heard them). I'm actually rather satisfied with the bass and I didn't do any hole punching or anything (yet). Fantastic sound for Rock and the like, but probably not enough serif he kind bass-heads who like their brains to rattle in their skulls as they listen. I like the bass on both the S500 and the MS1 - two different kinds of bass, but both enjoyable for the different qualities they have.

Last time I posted that I preferred the Alessandros it seems like there was a whole flare-up here about the S500's value and overall SQ. I disappeared from the topic because I was just happy with my headphones and felt no need to look at Head-Fi for a little bit. I really didn't mean to cause the flare-up, I just wanted to share that the MS1 signature was much more suited to my tastes and preferred genres of music.

I was one of the earlier adopters of the S500 and it was my first foray into Head-Fi territory. They cost me over $80 because they were a new release at the time, then add shipping costs from Japan as well as extra ear pads. So the value proposition of the S500 over the MS1 for me just isn't the same as people buying them for substantially cheaper now. I still stand by the MS1s being a better headphone for ME, my sound preferences and wallet size. I had to start somewhere to figure out what I like when it comes to sound and I discovered that the S500s didn't quite scratch my itch. It's not unusual and it doesn't make the S500s bad. I just figure that for other people who might not have felt satisfied with the S500s because of certain things like poor mids and congestion(IMHO!), then the Alessandro's/Grados might be just the thing for them.

This is all taste and opinion, guys. People on are so very defensive about their gear. They're just headphones, not political affiliations.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go float my boat in my giant cup of tea while I listen to my Alessandros and I'm not going to lose any sleep over what headphones others like more.
