How do I place my ATH-50m pleather earpads onto this headphone?

With so many posts in this thread, even a search becomes bewildering....

Maybe we need a sub-thread with links of posts specializing in ear-pad mods?

I don't think that I have seen anyone with the M50 pads yet...

Well the E11 is awesome for its portability and bass boost. It is a solid deal for the cost. But this little bravo amp is in another league in sound and don't cost that much but is not portable at all. It is a smaller desktop tube amp. Like DOC mentioned one of the real cool benefits of tube amps is. You can throw on another tube on here changing the sound characteristics..That tube adds a bit of warmth to your sounds while expanding your sounds like a good amp should.. If you log onto headfi tube amps are all over the site and for good reason.

LOL..."throw on another tube on here changing the sound"......be careful for what you wish for, I paid $450 for my tube amp, and thought the same thing, came with cheap Chineese tubes.  Three years later in the search for the best sound I am finally done buying tubes.  You may need to be accustomed to terms like "NOS".  I wanted the best for my tube amp, and ended up buying new old stock (NOS) tubes mfg back in 1961.....and I am very happy and need to buy no more.....paid $200 each for amplifier tubes, (2 needed), and $150 each for power tubes (2 needed)....and I bought two sets, because they burn out at some point!   I am rolling pads now to "change the sound", only ten to twenty dollars to change the sound.  But I am really happy with my Mullard tubes, and my tube amp, because they do "add a bit of warmth" to my sounds.  Tube rolling and pad rolling, a long and tedious process, beware!  Once you get hooked on the sound of tubes, your wallet will need a  lock, LOL!

Ya I am just dipping my feet into this little cheapo tube amp. So far I am very happy with it. You would never expect this level of sound for this much.  I wonder if buying an expensive amp is gonna get that much better in sound. But I am a simple man I won't need more or better amplification than what I am using. My Fire Phoenix was $90 and this tube amp was $130 I am happy with my cheap made in china products and my other cheap made in china JVC headphones and earphones. I purposefully don't go to meets for a reason. I don't need to hear 2-5G rigs at all. I am content with a $220 one. Lol.

It's not how much you pay for an amp, it's the build qualiy, power supply......it is quality tubes that make or break the sound, takes some research, and trial and error, and that is where the expense is.  Hey, I gots $20,000 tied up in my HT room, very good for the movies, but I don't use it for music, other than BR music and SACD!  I get better sound from my computer with jRiver MC, a $400 DAC, and my tube gears....best part....a S500 at $23.99 and a group of pads, diminishing returns from there!

Damn - another $ for HM5 pads going down the drain, specially after you and cyloh said  they are great with ATH velours.  And another excuse I postpone transplant of HA-S500 drivers into HA-M750 everything else for the x-th time.

But what i really wanted to say is thank you  guys for everything HA-S500 related. It is an interesting journey, teaching an old electrostatic dog some new dynamic games. Like pads -
so far I tried to avoid them by each and every mean imaginable and at all cost  ( Jecklin Float, AKG K 1000 ).

Don't transplant, just dampen and apply HM5 pads :D

There's so much to try on stock. Filter the driver vents with cotton(filter one, two or fully block em'), dampening the cups with different combination of materials, double the magnetic strength by chaining another magnet behind the driver, etc.

Tried the AT velours + HM5 pads today, and I agree with your impression above, love the layering!   Way better than just the velours!  Just another pad change that really works.  With all of the pads and pad combos available this is like have 5 or 6 pairs of headphones!  Something here for just about any preferred sound signature......fun rolling pads and listening to the results for sure!

Have you tried the AT velours + HM5 combo on the S400?

Yeah tried that on the S400. Wasnt as good compared to the S500. I prefer the stock pads + HM5 for the 400s.
With velours they seem to lose too much volume. I had to boost up the volume and seemed like some details were lost.

I happened to have an extra pair of ATH-m50 pads when I purchased the headphones, did not buy them to mod the JVC S500.  OK, I won't bother trying, thanks !

So the HM5 should be comfortable enough to use the s500 for long periods of time? where can you buy it outside of US? Tried looking for it in eBay but found nothing :frowning2:

I really like the s500 but can use it for long periods of time because it is just not comfortable enough

The only place  that I can find these HM5 pads is mp4nation, they sell it for like $8 a piece. Think they ship worldwide but not sure, since I have never ordered from them before........

Get those HM5 pads and you won't want to transplant

I will. But doubt it would stop me wishing for transplant. HA-M750, in a slightly modified form, still with original drivers, clobber HA-S500 with either stock or ATH velour or "most likely equivalent to ATH pleather" (canibalized from an undescript pair of on-ears of the right dimensions ) as far as soundstage and bass is considered. No contest. In speaker terms, HA-S500 is a very good mini monitor, HA-M750 modified is a good full sized floorstander. Stock HA-M750 is far inferiour to either HA-S500 or itself in modified version. My only gripe with HA-M750 is that they can be positioned on my very own head two ways - one giving spactacular audio and unfortunately pain on the part of the skull just in front of the ears after about 30 minutes, another super comfy but with too much reduced sonics. And it is a difference of say 5 degrees in angle HA-M750 is positioned on my head.

Grrrrrrrrrrr !

What I expect transplant to HA-M750 will bring to the table is dynamic range, high frequency extension and definition everybody on this thread in posession of HA-S500 is familiar with.

mp4nation does ship worldwide and their prices include worldwide shipping - that was the answer promptly received from them about 10 days ago.
Seem to be a very solid seller - I will order HM5 pads ASAP.

No you should still get your Fire Phoenix (or other similar DAC AMP). Your Fire Phoenix has a high end DAC in it and you can still utilize this DAC with the line out to your tube amp in the future if you so choose. This tube amp is has no DAC so it could be a great upgrade option down the road.

The Fire Phoenix is prolly a good starting point and you can expand on it as you get more into the hobby.

IMO.
