As Croozer said it is on their web site.  It does appear that the AH-D400 uses a different 50mm driver.

Why was D5000 so expensive compared to D2000? How many Ultrasones share the same driver? Why are modded T50RP's 3-5x the original price, it's still the same driver? You could go on..

Agree. I'm aware of the impact of various dampening (I do many DIY mod) but the D2000 and D5000 had only couple hundred to justify the wood/cable improvement ( I actually preferred the D2000 to the D5000 ) but twice the price is too much. I can see people getting the D7100 leather pads for their D600.

Can't wait to see if Layton Audio will custom these new Denon.

What is most important is sound quality so the real question is how significant is sound quality improvement of D7100 over D600 and is it worth so much money. For example I compared D7000 to T1 and yes T1 sound better for me but I don't think that difference worth twice the money while some ready to pay big money for even little bit of improvement

Did you not see the D2000/D5000/D7000 series?!

The D7000 have improved driver not the same as the D2000/D5000. As per my previous post the price difference was not as step as it is with the new Denon.

I'm not trying to say they are not worth it just an observation and personal opinion regarding pricing/ value.

Similarly, Smeggy's Thunderpants is about 6x times more expensive than the original Fostex T50RP. However having heard both the original T50RP and Smeggy's Thunderpants, they sound like completely different headphones despite being the same driver.
 
Admittedly I've not tried the AH-D600 but have tried the AH-D7100. The next time I go back to the shop, I'll give the AH-D600 shot, and try the AH-D7100 again.

No I agree with you... They are overpriced.... I think the D7000 and D5000 are overpriced as well

So after over 70 hours burn-in I finally did a quick comparison with my D7000 which i use for at home use. I just tried a few tracks but it showed me that D600 while having tight deep punchy not bleeding into the mids bass has emphasized upper part of bass so it's not as refined as D7000 so as expected you are not getting D7000's sound in new style enclose for less money. Also when paired with different setup you may get different result so take with grain of salt

That is not a good example. The Thunderpants are handmade custom headphone. More like a pieces of art.

The Stax SR-507 is about double the price of the SR-407, and it shares the same drivers. Most of the added cost goes into the different headband assembly and earpads.
 
MarkL mods (sans the wood cups) can really drive up the cost of stock Denons just from the damping, pads, and cables.
 
If the D7100 has wood accents, different pads, different cables, different damping... then I can see them "justifying" the price. Not saying it's worth it, but it's not particularly unusual.

But the D7000 has a different driver than the second banana (no insult intended) D5000.  The D5000 added wood cups and the D7000 cable (much like Grado & Senn) over what the D2000 has.

That is exactly what I am hoping to find out before making my purchase, especially since it is an understatement that the D7100 would be pushing my budget.  If I had the budget for a portable Summit-fi setup, I would buy a Fostex HP-P1 with Fostex TH900 headphones and call it a day.  Unfortunately, I have Rodeo Drive taste and a Target budget.  Since I admittedly listen mostly to compressed files on my Iphone through a FiiO E11 amp, I'm wondering if the difference between the D600 and D7100 is subtle enough that I almost wouldn't notice the difference, or if the cups and dampening actually have that much impact on these headphones.  I just purchased Audio Technica ATH-PRO700MK2s.  I like them for certain genres (the bass is fantastic), but they are too dark to be my go-to can (see my review under recent reviews if interested).  I have read the old Denons, while having solid bass, fall short regarding bass compared to these but are much brighter.  I'm also torn between the D600 and upcoming M-100 in addition to being extremely curious to audition the D400 when it comes out the end of the month- I have no idea what to expect from those based on Denon's description.
