It would have been if I would have attended the meet with my mechanical keyboard :p

By the way GL1TCH3D you still haven't replied to my message on Facebook.

Anyway I just gave out the answer, lol, no need to reply anymore..

Yep, I found yah! You're wearing silver Amperior on your profile picture.

Maybe you were just busy and missed the notification, but I sent you a message asking you GL1TCH3D to guess which creeper from Head-Fi I was.

I seem to recall someone at the meet saying the only thing missing was a complete balanced β22 amplifier. If we're lucky, there might just be one at the next meet. A fellow Québécois just joined Head-Fi and posted his build in the DIY forums. It's amazing, you guys have to check it out.

Now all we have to devise is a plan to have him show up to the next meet.

:D
that's awesome. looks nice.
I was debating between SE b22 or M^3, but ended up with the latter. my M^3 is pretty much done, just needs a few cosmetic tweaks pretty much. so there will be one of those too if the b22 shows up next meet.

(and he has a mechanical keyboard!)

Well rattesp was considering coming to the meet; but didn't in the end. He has a balanced b22, Little Dot MkVI and Beyer T1's

Oh boy, another LCD-2. :p The matching wooden chassis on the stack is really cool.

Wow! Seriously?!?! That's quite the end game you've got there! How much did this whole setup cost? I feel sorry for your wallet.

Are you enjoying this setup? Do you prefer it to what you had the chance to hear at the last meet?

Either ways, I think we're ready for a new meet now.

Oh it will be there in full force.

I'm planning on installing a discrete I/V circuit on the DAC, and hopefully I'm done until a super cheap SR-omega and BHSE pop up!

The total cost was actually not too horrible. Stax SR-404 Signature + transformer were $350, amp was $100, and the DAC was $400. To be honest, I mostly got the Stax because a friend was selling them, and it snowballed real fast. I got REALLY lucky with the DAC, it's a fairly rare balanced R2R and usually goes for closer to $600. I got the amp as an afterthought because I felt ridiculous running everything thought a crappy Denon receiver, but I honestly couldn't be happier with its sound. I just wish it didn't have separate volume knobs for each channel. The whole setup is fully balanced, and the total damage to my wallet is about as much as the pair of LCD-2s I thought I'd end buying after hearing them at the meet. :)

I really really like the Stax sound but I am finding it a bit fatiguing for longer listening sessions. I think what makes it special is the combination of soundstage and the accuracy/clarity of the low-level sounds. I think the overall tonal balance is closest to Jerg's HE-400 but I can't say my memory for these things is very good. It's fairly flat with a bit of emphasis on mids. The bass is super tight and goes low, but doesn't have as much impact as either the Audezes or the HE-6. I can't say for sure that I prefer it over what I heard, but for my taste I think I prefer it over the HD800/O2+ODAC combo. The LCD-2 is so different from it I wouldn't mind owning it too. (Who would?)

Incidentally, I heard HD800s again since the meet and it turns out I hated them there because I had a bad seal. I take it all back, they're awesome!

I'd be really curious to hear some other cans on this amp and DAC combo though. I sold everything else (like a lot of people who were at the meet, it seems) and lent my ESW9 to munchzilla, who accidentally sold everything before deciding what to get next.

I know a few of you are expecting something new soon so we should definitely do something once everyone has their new setups!

I still have exactly what I had at the meet, and I'm not planning on getting anything new. Only my Starving Student changed, because it changes every day. This thing is a learning project, and once a week I get to tweak something on it that makes it better. I actually received another hundred dollars worth of parts this week to upgrade it, and they are waiting on the shelf begging to be hacked. Can't wait to try those NOS German tubes...

Concerning the HE-400, it's strange but for me of all the headphones I heard at the meet the HE-400 is the one I remember best. And I didn't even like it, I don't think I would ever buy one. It's heavy, and has a nasty treble spike that kills me. But that bass! Woha what a ride. The cleanest bass I've ever heard out of any headphones. If there was a known way to tame the treble spike that did not touch the bass in any way, I might consider it as a complementary headphone for electronic music.

But still. <3 HD800. It's sad they are so overpriced though.

The price on those Stax is actually quite reasonable. I thought all electrostatics were well into the 4 digits, which was why so little people owned them. I guess I'll have to go read on these, some day.

it's not very difficult to find older STAX used, it seems. people usually start off with dynamics, which is probably why they find it a hassle to get amps and such for trying out STAX.
I can very much attest to PretentiousFood's STAX sounding amazing, and that was even before he got the amp and DAC. Denon receiver and built in DAC on computers motherboards soundcard.
really looking forward to hearing it now in all its glory.

It took me a while but eventually I also noticed the tizz in the upper treble and yeah, it's definitely a bit of a bummer. It's because the treble is not flat but a hill that peaks at about 13kHz.

I had to eventually replace my older pair because of some issues, but it turns out the new replacement has an even better bass response; the older pair had only bass extension down to about 28 Hz or so before just sort of buzzing rather than vibrating, the new pair is able to go down to 20 Hz flat out with very little roll-off. Pretty satisfied with that.
