Hi gents, late to the game but Ive been enjoying my 700. Don't have much to compare with except for a NAD hp 50.

Im using aq dragonfly n cayin c5, it does an admirable job of running it. Just got my balanced cable n waiting for desktop amo. See how that progress.

I listen to mostly jazz, classical n rock occasionally edm. So 700 works for me.

I've joined the Cavalli bandwagon for the Liquid Carbon which is another month of waiting in anticipation. I bought my cables from Custom Cans from UK, they were cheaper from Moon Audio which i initially planned to buy from. Another seller was ELA cables.

This is my first foray into balanced so i thought i'd go for the cheaper option and save the money for a better dac. I'd probably couldn't tell the difference between the good cables or the bad cables anyway.

I've received my cables from Custom Cans but i really dont know how they would perform until next month. They do look nice and well made, and Custom Cans did it and shipped it quite fast.

I just spent 15 minutes with the 700 and my Ak Jr. They are bright but not as bright as my 325e's. I prefer the 700s over those. I'm looking to change my el8 opens for these and I'm still on the fence for the swap.

HD700 became $400 as used. I wouldnlove to check this out.

SRH1840 beats HD650, T1 but not HD800.
SRH1840 has a very good sound stage, durability, light weight, comfort, cheap price but it's still a cavemen's headphone compared to HD800.

How would you compared HD700 to SRH1840? Are they similar?

I have all of these headphones and will say that I have kept them for their own unique sounds.

HD-700 and SRH-1840 are very different:
HD-700 has a fun sound IMO, good bass, great sound stage, highs that can get sibilant depending on the genre, best amp I have is Ember for it.
SRH-1804 is close to HD-650, the HD-650 will scale with better equipment but the SRH-1840 is much easier to drive and will work quite well with a Fiio X3 or X3ii

I have both EL8 open and HD-700, if even swap then I would keep the EL8 and just buy a new HD-700 which has been under $500 quite a lot recently.  If getting some money in the swap then go for it, IMO the HD-700 is a much better headphone but will need a better amp than the EL8 which can be driven by iphone or DAP quite well.

It will be an even swap and I really cant have both. Im trying to keep my HP inventory at 3. I currently have the HD600, EL8 open, and K7xx on the way from the recent drop. Ill be running them through the AKjr, ALO Pan Am, and the M&M2 stack. I Appreciate the advice and if you have any other input based on my inventory that would be great!

I would get the HD-700 over the EL8 open, the M/M2 stack might be a little too bright for the HD-700 but I think the ALO pan am should be ok, a friend has it and my limited time with them they sound really good.  Since you have the HD-600 and K7XX I would say you like headphones on the brighter side.  I tend to keep most of my headphones for their different sounds but if I had to keep only 3 it would be LCD-2f / TH-600, HD-700 and HE-560, they all sound great with project Ember

Thanks DavidA. Ill give the 700 another shot and decide from there. I havent heard the K7XX's but for the price I think it was worth a shot. The 600s and the EL8s compliment each other well IMHO and I think the 700s will too. SInce you mentioned the HE-560s I had those on my radar too but no chance to demo them. Do they sound similar to the 700s and at about 300 dollars more new do you think its worth the price difference?

The K7XX and HD-700 are different enough that I keep both, the HE-560 are great but the HE-400i at $400 or so is a better deal IMO, yes the HE-560 are better than the HE-400i but not $400 better.  The HE-560 is a different sound from the HD-700, a little more balanced and smoother in the highs.  I know you will enjoy the K7XX, its one of those great headphones that is unknown to many outside of head-fi.  Don't forget DACs/AMPs also play a role in how these headphones sound, for my main system I'm using a Biforst and UD-301 for my DAC and Lyr2, Ember and BH Crack for my amps.  I don't have the HD-600, heard them at my friend in Japan's place and at my other friend here on Oahu, they are leaner sounding compared to the HD-650 but still really nice.  Both of my friends us a BH Crack with them and I would have to agree that its one of the better pairing.  The HD-700's are ok with the BH Crack but I've found them best with the Ember, I think the output impedance of the BH Crack is a little too high for the HD-700 but does wonders with HD-600/650/800 and DT-990/T1.

Very imformative my firend I really appreciate you taking the time to lay everything out. I have a lot to digest and a lot of parings to try out. Im not so sure how much fun it will be as its all a little overwhelming right now. I have been extremely happy with my HD600s even just running it through the AK Jr but as the saying goes curiosity killed the cat. Hope it wont be the case with me. My pocketbook is slowly dying! hahahaha!

Take your time, I killed my wallet in a few months but now I'm just enjoying all of the headphones, DACs and AMPs that I have gotten in the last year and a half.  I'm getting old (will be 55 in a few months) so my hearing isn't getting better, I'm at the point that what I currently have is pretty much end game for me, maybe only a SR-009 or some other $xxxx amp or dac may be in the future but if I can 't hear the difference I will not get it.  I've heard the SR-009 a few years ago at my friends house so I know that would be it for me but I don't think it is worth the price from what I currently have.
Getting back to the HD-700, I think its a great headphone, love it with watching movies late at night, great sound stage and dynamics.  Also works pretty good for classic rock/rock.

Im really trying. I normally dont change headphones till they break but since I have gotten into this quite heavily the expenses dont seem to slow down. I have been working as a Dj playing clubs and bars here at my local for over a decade, so I always looked as headphones as a tool I needed for work. I have a pretty big cd collection that started back in the 80s and Its just recently I started using headphones to listen to my old rips. Research and re-reipping those old cds has gotten me to this point. I guess you could say Im looking for a good affordable balance. For amps and dacs Im quite happy with my stuff. I have enough sources to plug into to keep me busy I really just want 3 solid headphones that are different enough to keep me happy. To stay on topic ill be heading back to the store sometime this week and spend more time with the 700 and ill probly take the Pan am along. Your advice has got me excited to give it another round. Ill et you know how it goes either way.

I wasn't trying to troll. I just thought i'd throw the Shure 1840's in the mix in case anyone was on the fence. My experience is with 1840's and HD 800's. Going off what a bulk of the reviews say about the HD 700's.

Hi,

welcome to head-fi! Since you just recently joined. Here is a part of the posting guidelines, I recommend to read them in their entirety. Posting your own impressions, no matter how contrary to common impressions or contradictory they might be, is totally fine. But repeating opinions from others or stuff you read somewhere, without any personal experience with the kit you are talking about - is a big nono here. You can say that: "based on the majority of reviews I could find, the consensus seems to be they sound like this or that..." is fine.

Quote:
Please don't recommend or post reviews of equipment you don't own or otherwise don't have a reasonable amount of familiarity with. You wouldn't recommend someone a car you've never driven or suggest someone live in a country you haven't been to, so recommending headphones and equipment you haven't owned or used is unhelpful. Even if you've seen the same comments about something from a dozen members, save discussion of that if you're intending to buy it yourself. Likewise, People use the reviews in the Head Gear section to decide what product to buy, and brief impressions or comments by people who don't own a product (or at least haven't had it in their possession for a sufficient amount of time) are unhelpful.

Similarly, please avoid trashing equipment you haven't used or aren't familiar with. Having doubts about something you see in a design is fair enough, but to quote Robert Pirsig: "The test of the machine is the satisfaction it gives you. There isn't any other test. If the machine produces tranquility, it's right. If it disturbs you it's wrong until either the machine or your mind is changed." It is quite possible to derive satisfaction from listening with any audio gear as much from your appreciation of the design (whether how it looks or how it measures) as much as how it reproduces music. No method of appreciation is "wrong".

Enjoy the ride

Cheers,
K
