Hi guys,

i'll be getting a new set of headphones as part of my new PC and just wanted to get some opinions between my selections.

Ive narrowed it down between the Sennheiser HD 598's and the Astro A40 2011. Now a majority of people recommend the 598s as they give the best sound quality, but my concern is which headset is best for GAMING.

I can understand that for music and movies the 598s will come on top, but in terms of a gaming experience which one will be better? As i've heard that the bass on the 598's isnt the greatest, which im concerned will mean that all the explosions and bullets fired wont sound as good compared to the A40 (which apparently has gotten a lot better with the new 2011 edition).

Note: i will be using a Xonar STX sound card with either one, so im not really looking for the mixamp bundle.

Thanks :)

thanks for the reply!

i hadn't heard about the DTs before now and looks like that might be a third candidate now! (makes my life more difficult haha). Have you tried the HD598s or A40s so that i know how they compare?. Main thing is i want excellent sound stage and mids, and realistic bass. i must say i do prefer the look of the 598s and a40s more, but is the dt990 really that much better? (please be as objective as possible, although i realise sound is a very subject thing, but since i dont own a pair of audiophile headphones atm ill just let the placebo affect do its thing once ive been convinced of the best :p )

anyone second the DT990s?

I second the STX, becasue of its High output impedance you need a set like the DT990, MalVeaux knows what he is talking about, you don't need another opinion. but you can look at the Mad lust envy gaming thread.

thanks guys! yeah i've pretty much narrowed it down to the HD598s and the DT990 Pro, just trying to decide between these two. Considering this is my first high end headset do you guys even think i would be able to tell a difference between them two? to be honest im hoping that i cant so i can just choose the 598s (to me its like beauty vs the beast, the beast being the 990s). Really dont like their look, but i dont want o be left disappointed by the 598s in the 'fun' department, ie. realistic explosions and bullets whizzing past.

The DT990 Pro 250-Ohm headphones are full bass, full treble, good sound stage, clear vocals.
The Dt990s gives a "movie theater" like sound.
But I'm sure you would be happy using the HD598, It would have half-way decent bass.
The HD598 would work well for use with portable media players over the DT990s.
The DT990 are $70 cheaper then the HD598s.
$100 cheaper if you got a DT990 store demo (eBay).

This thread makes me kind of upset.
I just ordered a Asus Xonar STX along with the HD598's for competitive gaming... was that a bad choice? Sorry for thread jack, just had to ask.

I'm sure you will be happy with that combo, I like using my HD558s with the STX.
