I'm still waiting for someone to do a field coil headphone :D

(With an all-tube energizer, or course!)

It would be even funnier if they (somehow) required a speaker amp to drive them (a la the HE-6).. LMAO.

I guess sensitivity will be quite low. You will probably need at least an SR-71A to make them sing...

But seriously (and more realistically), it would be interesting if Hifiman (or someone else) could come up with a sealed, portable planar magnetic headphone for not more than USD 300. It should be drivable by one of the new generation of powerful portable amps (P4, E12 etc.). This shouldn't be impossible, as it has (more or less) been done before by Yamaha, amongst others.

They seem to have thrown in the towel. Lots of alerts about upcoming higher-tier gear and then crickets.

Oh man I am interested in this definitely... I am too spoiled by the HE-400's sub bass to the point it really bugs me even though I know some IEMs are technically better in some areas in comparison i.e. RE-272's transparency.

If this IEM has low impedance kinda like the HE-400 and has that planar sound, I'm all over this one.

Unless they do something utterly insane and use a substrate that can be thin enough to allow a large excursion distance (like graphene), I would not expect this project to become a reality. The smaller the driver, the less excursion distance it's going to have, which means less bass, less treble, etc.

Did they manage to get a prototype working?

It still seems like an interesting idea.
