Dave Matthews Band
Metallica
Pantera
Audioslave
Pink Floyd
Dream Theater
Miles Davis
John Coltrane
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Boston Brass

Do you think I would benefit more from another upgrade (source?) over another pair of headphones?

It would take you just a little over budget but might I recommend that you get the 580's ($150) and some SR60's ($62)? that way you have your uber detailed all around cans (580) and when you want to really rock out you can grab the SR60's...

69 @ headroom

I might have to consider going down that road, but not right away.

i really like the 580's for pretty much everything (and i do listen to everything) but if you want a sound that is in your face then the grados are it

my advice is to grab some 580's, test the waters and if they don't float your boat, sell them,

there's always someone wanting a pair.

The 7509 is a sonic sound-a-like of the MDR-V700DJ, a positively villified headphone on here. I would lay odds on anyone saying that anything is a step above and that there is nothing for the 7509 to 'make up'

Nevertheless, I liked to use it from time to time for it's soothing nature, which comes more from glossed-over details and a lack of focus in the rendition, rather than what the purists here would generally consider smooth. Technically inferior for the money but also very comfortable and rather agreeable, not to mention very easy to power.

The amped 580's should bring the technical inadequacies of the 7509 into sharp focus. I can't really say whether the PIMETA is truly sufficient for them to retain a power reserve for power rock and so forth... I would say give it a try. And as sleepkyng said, if you don't like them you can sell them. One note: If you didn't like the clamping force of the DT770Pro (which can be adjusted by bending the headband and the earcup retaining arms subtly) you might be even less enamoured of the 580.

Yes, I know how hated the 7509's are. Trust me, I have heard it every week since I bought them. I always thought they were a step above the 7506 (V6), which many seem to like (note: I didn't compare them). Not having other 'high-end' headphones to compare to, I can't really describe them myself. However, I find them extremely comfortable, and they were perfect for what I originally bought them for (a month in Alaska). Maybe they will fill some niche in my system, or I could just sell them to some unsuspecting newbies

Interestingly enough, when I tried the 580's just because they were there, I didn't find them uncomfortable. Right now I am planning on getting the hd-580s, maybe upgrade to a PPA, then eventually get an SACD player. Is it safe to assume the bass will be considerably louder and better in general with the hd580? Also, bangraman, have you owned any of the Grado's to say how they compare to the mrd7509 or hd580?

Do you think the Shure E2's would work well for the rock portion of what I listen to? How is there comfort, considering that I dislike the er4p? Do you consider them to be worth the cost premium over the Plugs?

edit: in addition to the 580's
