I have both D2K and HE-400, since 400 arrived I have hardly used D2K they are no match to HE-400 imaging and separation. And sub-bass of D2K is marginal upgrade over HE-400 not significant improvement. Check Ravan review on them, http://www.head-fi.org/t/605929/review-comparison-he-400-vs-d2000-with-snippets-of-hd650-thrown-in#post_8311737

I suggest, If you have/plan to buy good amp then HE-400, otherwise D2K

Good amp may be somewhat misleading. The he400 sounds very nice all the way down to many of the fiio amps around the $100 mark IMO. I would say however that the he400 will scale up nicely with such amps as the Schitt lyr and will give you more.

It sounds good even further down the line, all the way to a regular headphone out of an MP3 player.

I did notice a large improvement with the Asgard though. I feel like the Lyr would be overkill(buying an amp that's more expensive than the HP seems silly) but I'd like to try it one day. The whole tube maintenance thing really made me decide against it though.

I don't really think people buy the lyr for its power, just for its sound signature.  It has the bass slam that people enjoy.  The one headphone that should benefit from the lyr's power, people choose to use speaker amps for, so there's always that too.

I am not sure Lyr is Summit amp or not, but I do enjoy HE-400 more than HD-650 on them. They are similar sounding HP’s but for me HE-400 wins with better bass and imaging.

Socket savers

Which socket savers do you have? I ended up with a freebie pair, but the tubemongers look like that are better.

I purchased the socket savers from Tubemonger for the purpose of raising the tubes (run hot) to allow more cooling. The result is the chassis is much cooler, removing tubes is easier and sq no change.  When removing a tube, the new base tends to lift off, so I gently hold it down with a thin Wood stick.

I have not had this issue. Wait...I get what you're saying. When you take tube out the base stay in the amp, right? For me, the tubes for too tight into the base for that. I don't think that I could keep it from lifting off even with the thin stick that you mention. That would be a nice trick though. I wish that the fit were looser...

If you are ordering from head direct, you can get them there and they will ship with your order. They are only $10. I'd suggest two pair.
