If the HD800 sounds bright the issue is the amp. I tried/heard several amps with them and also found them annoyingly tipped up and thin.
With my nice tube amps they are perfect, not bright, just balanced and natural.

I also don't quite agree with this. I have noticed remarkable improvements with my LG (RCA Coin Base 6SN7s, Thanks Morbid!) paired with the HD800, but the brightness is still there on some tracks. But IMO, how bright a headphone is completely subjective to the listener, ergo a change in amplification may change that, but more than likely not.

Disclaimer: I'm quite sensitive to high amounts of treble, so something that sounds bright to me, may not be exhibited in measurements or for others.

I've experienced this more with the HE-6 than any other headphone.  Where the amp selection made a noticeable difference.

Hi,

Is anyone that pairing the TH-900 with Benchmark DAC2 that can provide some feedback?

Thanks,
Funny you asked that. I tried it briefly last weekend with Currawong & it didn't wow me. Sounded nice, & couldn't find any faults but I'm a former Benchmark DAC1 Pre owner & to me it had the typical Benchmark sound. Setup was my RWAK100 optical out to the DAC2 HGC. However I've been using the HP-A8/Zana Deux for the past 2-3 weeks so may have been influenced by that.

Thought I’ll post some impressions on the TH 900.

My set up is Ipod -> CLAS -> RS 71A -> TH 900.
My baseline ‘direct’ comparison was to my second pair of headphones, the Ed 8’s.

Overall my impressions for the TH900 are thus:
-          Definitely better sound stage and imaging than the Ed 8’s
Compared to the Ed 8, one can immediately notice a far bigger sound stage. The instruments have depth and the ‘field’ broadens dramatically. Not in a bad way though.
However, the Ed 8's have a way with certain genre's of music - say Jazz where it just sounds better and I think this is something to do with S logic or how it presents the higher frequencies.
-          Much better bass  - I know some reviews here say the Ed 8’s have good bass but I have always struggled in this regard. May be its my set up, but the few options I tried, did not produce what I needed
The TH 900 really brings the whole spectrum alive. Towards the higher end of the curve, the Ed 8’s match this resolution, but on the lower end, the bass is just so much better. Did not sound too boomy to me, I thought it sounded pretty tight and controlled
-          Less comfortable to wear than the Ed 8s
The Ed 8’s are clearly the easier headphones to put on. May be it’s the size of my head but it just snaps on and feels like a perfect fit. Not that the TH 900 is uncomfortable, it sits well. However, it doesn’t feel snug.
-         Very poor isolation
This is really my only big gripe. It really is just couple of steps away from being an open headphone when it comes to how it sounds sitting next to the guy wearing the red phones

Based on the few posts here is the contentious bit –
-          I recently had the opportunity to visit a Sennheiser showroom where they had a listening room set up with all sorts of their headphones.
Long story short, I just did not find the HD 800 exciting at all. In fact, I thought the HD 700 sounded much better. This was hooked to a Sennheiser amp, a dac and to a Rega cd player.

Most of the conclusions above are based on my experience owning few headphones. Besides the above mentioned, at some point in the past I had the Grado RS1i’s, Beyerdynamic DT770 LE, Ultrasone sig pro’s and few IEM’s.

How do you find the HP-A8 as a DAC only?
You wrote it was slower than the DP1 and you didn't seem to like it much (or did you?) in the corresponding post.

I bored with the NFB-27 I cannot get to sound good with my new ultrabook! I used to get an excellent sound with my mom's notebook but I messed it up while trying to get my UB to sound as good (and I got a BADA LB-5600 power filter in the meantime which sound worse than the no-name power strip I was using before it).
It definitely is not a plug & enjoy device and I'm starting to consider selling it...

Also, how to you like the RWAK100 as a DAC & just a source?

Thanks

Hi guys, just about to take the plunge and get a pair of th900 after hearing them at last years gather.

I have a question for those who ordered with pricejapan. Did you use EMS or DHL and what is the difference? Did any of you have to pay import taxes or other non-upfront fees (Shipping to UK myself)

Cheers,

-Matt :)

Hey Matt,

I just replied in your classified posting, but will post here as well.

I just received the TH900 from PriceJapan today. I ordered a few headphones from them and have always selected EMS shipping. Shipping took 3 days to ship from Japan to Canada.

By request, PriceJapan lowered custom value to $150 (Canadian). I only had to pay $30 when I received them. I"m not sure how tax works in UK, but I'm sure it shouldn't be too much if the custom value is low.

Thanks for speedy reply, how do you mean by request? so they allow you to choose whatever price you want them to declare?

Also as an additional question to anyone what wants to answer. How would you say these compared to the HE-400s comfort wise as I've not had a pair on my head for a long period?

EDIT: Any way to pay via paypal without the 3.5% extra fee?

You can either e-mail them in advance, or if you are paying by Paypal, it will allow you to attach a note to the seller.

I included the following note: "Please declare headphones at ~ 15,000 Yen"

Also, if you are paying by Paypal, I discovered that paying their quoted USD prices in my currency (CAD) ended up costing a lot more bc of  Paypal currency conversion. It ended up being cheaper if I paid by Yen currency. Not sure if how that affects you, but something to double check before buying.

Kaneda from pricejapan is very responsive. If he's awake, you'll get a reply within the hour. Very impressed with their service.

I just received a pair of TH-600 from them to France. I chose EMS too and Chronopost take care of the delivery here in France. It took 3 days as well, extremely fast!
I sent a mail (info at pricejapan) asking them to lower the declared value to $300-400. In the end, they put 13,000Yens (~90€) and I'm quite happy they did so!

Of course, as any package handled by Chronopost, I had to pay the customs: 28€ taxes + 21€ processing (those *****ers!), which is very nice in the end.

If the TH-600 are any indication - and I doubt they aren't - comfort is much better than HE-400 + velour.
They are - and feel - lighter, the pleather pads have a much nicer feel than the new-style Hifiman velours but both are rather stiff.
They are articulated, which gives them a "strange loose" feeling at first

The cable is also much nicer but I think the TH-900 come with a different cable from that of the 600s.
