There is likely another possibility to fix some SGS3 non-interworking issue: use the USB core driver of the Archos G9 tablet.

The Archos G9 tablet can interwork with the FiiO E17.

The SGS3 can’t interwork with the FiiO E17, even via a powered USB hub.

And drivers/usb/core/message.c of Archos G9 and of SGS3 are different, slightly different.

Some XDA developer could build and try a modded Android Linux kernel including the USB core driver of the Archos G9 tablet.

Dmesg log output and lsusb log output could detail what is going on at the kernel level.

dmesg:

lsusb:

Possible, or you SGS3 guys can tell samsung directly? if no response then go the modded root.

"Android for developers...". "Android that allows hardware vendors to...."

Will we ever see the real thing?

I've contacted them, figure I also deserve to participate in the beta :)

If words make sense, your Nexus 7 will very likely play nicely with some USB DAC straight out the box, because the ALSA USB audio stack was present in the Android source code before Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

I wish I had a compatible droid device (and headfi knowledge) to be a potential beta tester. Also, the last few posts are quite promising. DanBa, thanks for all the useful info and links. The combinations/tests which you posted on the androidforums thread about usb audio was a great read too.

I have rooted Galaxy Note. I love installing roms on it and soon (whenever developers release) we will have jelly bean on our devices. So I was wondering, does that mean I can use usb audio? Because I almost bought FiiO E17 to use with my ICS Galaxy Note but I was glad to have read that ICS still did not support usb dac.

Bad news!

The USB DAC recommended by Google is a new type of device. It is not compatible with PC or Mac.

A legacy USB DAC compatible with PC / Mac acts as a USB device, and a PC / Mac acts as a USB host.
A USB DAC recommended by Google acts as a USB host, and a Android smartphone / tablet acts as a USB device.

Personally, I prefer the legacy USB audio feature implemented by Samsung on Galaxy S III, which can interwork with a legacy USB DAC like FiiO E7 or ODAC.

The legacy USB audio feature is still specified in the Android specs:

Actually this means it leaves it up to the manufacturer, so no not bad news, great news. Because that way we can have extended batteries built into dacs like the vamp

So theoretically I'll have no problem using my E17 with the Nexus 7 with the appropriate adaptors?
