I tried the Zu Mobius. The first fit was tough. I really had to forch it in. I contacted Nate about this. The force was worth it! The sound of the 650s just opened up. I never realised the detail they had. I thought the stock cable was good. It is. The Mobius is a couple of steps up. I had tried the Cardas with my firat pair of 650s and did not like it. I also did not like those 650s with the stock cable. I really beleive there was a problem wit those cans.

Glad to see it's worked out for you. Give the cables some time they get much better.

Don't you just love the 1/4" plug of the Mobius, it is so damned good loooking, and fits like you know what into locking jacks

If locking Neutrik jacks did not exsist I would be a happy man. Yes they are audio jewelry!

Ordered the 2.5M Mobius for my HD600's yesterday w/ 3 day FedEx and they are already in town tonight so I should get them tomorrow! I will have to be careful and not drool on it

Is the 1/4" jack the same as the one in the picture on the Zu Site? I like the look of the 1/8" connector. The 1/4" looks like the connectors on most of my guitar cords so I'm kinda used to that look. Would drool act as a contact solution?

Yup, zu-ed 650s start good and get better. Lots more detail and, IMHO, better frequency extension. Once fitted, those little aluminum connectors make for a nice, professional appearance.

Should make that tube rolling experience you've got planned all the more interesting; if it's there, you're gonna hear it!

I was a little surprised to hear some members at Hirsch's recent "super ultra fab" meet felt the Senn 650/Zu bass was a bit exaggerated.

Although I have never been to meet I suspect the conditions are less than ideal for proper evaluation, and rapid comparison of so many amps, headphones, cables can leave one a bit confused of what exactly is causing a given sound character.

I personally am very impressed with bass performance of Senn 650/Zu using Headroom 2002 Max amp...........perhaps Hirsch will give us his bottom line impressions here soon.

I was wondering the same thing. I've had nothing but good feelings about the bass (and balance as a whole) of the Senns. To me these are the first pr. of phones I've owned that get it close to sounding right. Some of the people claimed the bass would fall apart or the control of it was not right. I would think that to be an amp problem over a headphone one.
Anyway on my system the bass of the HD650's is really nice. Low, tight, and focused. Not at all out of balance with the rest of the music.

Here's a dumb question.... What side should the red dot connector go on (L or R)? I assumed red goes on right. So that's what I did. It definately took some pressure. I don't have the trained ears or vocabulary to describe the improvement but I would definately say that the sound was lush. The soundstage increased. The sound was still "in my head" but it was as if my head was bigger

Anyway, I noticed that the Mobius logo was facing towards me. No big deal but it made me think about how I attached my cable. Since my headphone amp doesn't have a balance control I plugged into my preamp and found that I had reversed the connection! Arghhh

I then reversed the connection and now the left side isn't as tight as the first time. I guess I answered my own question but maybe someone else can learn from my mistake..... Now for some extensive auditioning

i only found the 650/zu bass to be exaggerated when being driven by the fischer 400 receiver, which really pumps out the low frequencies. it was only really out of control on one track, which was miles davis - johnny bratton (take 4) from the jack johnson box. the bass is pretty up-front on this cut to begin with, which is one reason i wanted to give it a test spin after hearing what the fischer is capable of
basshead.gif
i didn't mean to give the impression that the 650s and/or the mobius were responsible for this though. i'm not familiar with either component to make that call (haven't even heard a stock 650), and the 650's bass was not overpowering on other recordings. unfortunately i did not a/b this particular track w/ the 650s on a different amp. fwiw, the first thing that struck me about the 650/zu on my virgin listen through the perreaux was the improved bass response over the 600s. i wasn't able to fully adapt to this at the meet however, and on some familiar recordings, the contour of the bassline was confusing to me. i now think this is probably due to my being accustomed to the 600 bass "hump".

past couple days i've been listening to the 600s w/ the foam removed from under the earpads, as some suggested doing on this board. very interesting little mod i must say. the bass bloat is much less evident now, and the low notes resolve more clearly. the bass on that miles track sounds about right to me. i like it. also ordered the oehlbach cable from meier. if i can retain this bass reponse while adding just a bit more body to the low end, my ears will be very happy indeed

i'm curious to hear hirsch's final thoughts as well. hirsch, if you feel the bass is too much on the 650/zu, i'd suggest trying the foam removal mod. if you're still not satisfied, i'll be happy to swap my oehlbach for your zu

Juergen, I don't own the Mobius, but yes, red is always right in audio. Maybe someone can give an odd-ball exception to this rule, but red is right at least 99.99% of the time.
