RoCoo P DAP - Full Review
Feb 8, 2012 at 5:56 PM Post #256 of 505
My Rocoo P won't read my SD card anymore.. I was listening to it and it goes to sleep timer automatically while playing a song from the sd card. Since then it can't read any sd anymore.
I tried reformatting the card, put just one flac. The rocoo just hanged on the CMI screen. I need to reset it to get it to work again (without sd inserted). I tried other card.. same problem. Just won't read any sd anymore.

Anyone had this problem before? Any solution? I'll try flashing the firmware again tomorrow and see if it helps. Otherwise I need to return it to Jack.

I am searching for a DAP and more and more confused by this thread. Three questions: 1. What accounts for the difference between the standard D and the Power D, which someone termed a much inferior product? Is it simply the power level? 2. Have the two versions been listened to side-by-side, ideally blind (maybe I missed the post. Is that done here)? 3. Are there still concerns with their reliability? The last post definitely concerns me!

The Rocoo P has a class A amp inside it so it gives it more power. From what I've heard it is less neutral than the stock Rocoo so its more fun sounding, has thicker notes and is considerably more powerful so it can drive more power hungry cans (at least when compared to its counterpart). The Rocoo standard is more on the neutral side, has a thinner sound and plays better with sensitive IEMs from what I've heard. Its not plagued with hiss (or at least not as much hiss) as the Rocoo P and Studio V are. Regardless I really love my Studio V and could not part with it.

I had a different SD card problem, whilst switching between 2 cards, where files seemed to dissappear from folders on 1 card. So I deleted the contents of the system folder then turmed it off and on again. Problem solved.

It's got to be worth a go

Looks much nicer than the old Rocco, but much bigger. Good design call, HiSound.

Its actually not so large if you compare it to the fuze. Its about the same size in form factor as the Sansa Fuze but double its thickness. Not bad at all if you consider it battery life and how portable it still is. Charging times are crazy though lol. Id say 14 hours to fully charge it. I usually charge it at work to save power lol (nuclear power plant).

The old rococo was shorter than my shuffle 1g, and just a bit rounder. So, the new one is certainly larger, but I don't see that as a problem.

The question is though would its hiss be at acceptable levels for you. You seem to have acute hearing especially when it comes to hiss lol.

You know me well. I came from the hiss less MD world, so when I had to suddenly get an MP3 player, especially that people were raving about, and it hissed worse than any home system I've used, I felt cheated. That wasn't a HiSound. It was something else. Eventually, I got used to it. Then, when HiSound made promises, I stupidly believed it, and listening first, was surprised, and passed it off as well, it's made for high impedance headphones. Except, it came with portable earphones, with whom I would hear hiss, too, and which would lose bass resolution when the impedance switch was set to 0. That was only the start.

But, I have high hopes that HiSound will eventually make something that works as advertised and promised, and will stop berating potential customers. (That last bit is the most unforgivable bit.)

So are you saying it's not good?

Works great and a much nicer <1 min. solution to having to reflash.

Hi,

I have a pair of Sennheiser IE80s and am looking for a good portable player to play my flac files. Reading the op, i get the impression that this is an excellent player with a good price. Would this player be ideal for my IEMs? Also is the hissing that big of an issue? Im used to no hiss at all in my earphones so i think if i use this it might bother me quite a bit.

Wow, it would be hard for me to endure hiss unless I could somehow combine masochism with snobbishness. If D standard has less hiss than the power version and is more neutral, then shouldn't that be the way to go? Yet D standard is simply not in play here because...it sounds thin? (Is that the criticism?) Does "thin" mean than the sounds are not doubled or colored? Or lacking expansive frequencies or..what? The talk here is intriguing but also maddening for someone like me, nonhobbist with limited funds but pretentious ears, desperate for accurate reproduction but also desperate to avoid overpriced whimsies.

Beside Power edition has louder output, the sound tunings are different between Standard edition and Power edition. Some complaint the bass of the Standard edition is non-existent. I'd not go that far; if you are into bass impact, it will be a problem. You mentioned you have limited funds. When buying from a foreign country, you should take considerations of shipping and warranty -- shipping can be costly; warranty wise, it will not be protected by your local law; a chance to be seized by Custom because of low value declaration (to avoid duty).
